ACTUATORS NOW FEATURE BUILT-IN WIRELESS SENSORS
Ewellix, formerly SKF Motion Technologies, has redesigned its high performance CASM-100 and LEMC actuators with
built-in wireless sensors that can detect force and temperature. According to the company, it has developed the new actuators,
which deliver forces up to 82kN and speeds of 1m per second, to provide real-time, accurate information that improves machine productivity. These feature integrated force sensors within the body of the actuator to provide a precise measurement of the torque being delivered from the motor through the internal ball or rollerscrew, even when the actuator is stationary. In addition, the sensor acts as a temperature monitoring device that activates an alarm if the actuator is at risk of overheating. This configuration provides operational information in
real-time, which can be communicated to higher level control systems. As a result, the company explains, it is possible to improve overall performance and productivity, with greater safety. Both types of actuators are available in multiple combinations
covering a wide range of applications. The built-in sensor enables measurements to highlight how space and energy savings can be achieved through downsizing attachments. This leads to an overall cost reduction of the production line, while still delivering safer manufacturing processes. A further advantage of having the Ewellix IoT-ready actuators with sensors is that when converting from a hydraulic system to an electro-mechanical one, it is easier to specify the correct sized actuator for the job, the company explains.

LINEAR POSITION SENSOR SUITS MOTORSPORT INDUSTRY DEMANDS
For its 2019 car for the Formula Student Competition, Team Bath Racing (TBR) developed a new hydraulic clutch that included precision position feedback as part of its closed-loop hydraulic system. To meet the requirements, the team chose Positek’s P118 series pushrod style linear position sensors which are suited to precision measurement tasks where space is at a premium and where durability, reliability and affordability are key factors. These measure just 19mm in diameter, and offer a customised stroke range from 2mm to 50mm and linearity to ±0.25%. The clutch needs to withstand the extreme shock
and vibration loads associated with motorsports as well as race track temperature, humidity and weather extremes. In both performance and track test modes complete reliability is essential. Its design, however, also required that the measurement sensor be installed in the smallest possible envelope with minimal weight an important factor. TBR developed a design that effectively isolated the P118 from the extreme temperature levels inherent with dynamic clutch operation but still required a generous working temperature range and IP67 sealing as a minimum for dependable operation.
COMPACT TOOTHED BELT AXIS LAUNCHED
New from igus is drylin ZLN-40, a compact toothed belt axis based on its flat drylin N linear system. Measuring 27mm high and 40mm wide, it can be delivered with a stroke length of up to 750mm. When equipped with an igus motor
and drive controller, it can handle loads of up to 20N and has a speed ratio of 60mm per revolution. Capable of withstanding moisture, dirt and dust, the lightweight toothed belt is supported on ball bearings which enable high speed motion. According to the company, by using
iglidur polymers in the guide carriage, the linear axis runs lubrication-free and thus maintenance-free.

OPERATION OF LINEAR GUIDES
ENSURED BY NEW LUBRICATION UNIT
In order to ensure the long-term, maintenance-free, operations of linear guides, NSK is offering the K1-L lubrication unit. Providing enhanced lubrication capabilities over the K1 which was launched in 1996, this is said to contribute to preserving the environment by cutting resources and energy consumption through longer service life, lower friction and reduced oil usage. Effective lubrication is essential to
maintaining linear guide performance over extended periods, and the K1-L has been designed to provide an entirely new level of long-lasting lubrication, the company explains. Deploying regular maintenance routines to apply the necessary lubricant is both time consuming and costly, however the K1-L overcomes this issue by improving the capacity of the lubricating oil supply, thus extending maintenance intervals. This results in an increase in both uptime and productivity, while maintenance costs are reduced. The K1-L also offers a considerable

series include body clamp mounting and spring loaded pushrod with a wider operating temperature range of -40 to +125˚C for the 5V input version. 24V DC nominal input versions are also available with output options including 4-20mA and 0.5 -9.5 V DC.

improvement in lubrication capabilities – thanks to a newly developed resin, the unit can supply oil for nearly twice as long as the K1. Furthermore, the special shape of the K1-L reduces dynamic friction force by about 20% when the slider moves along the rail of the linear guide; and a newly developed protective casing helps maintain structural integrity and further impede the entry/release of dust and other particle contaminants. Initially, the K1-L will be available
for the company’s standard range of linear guides – the NH and NS series – but it will be expanded to cover further models in the future.
