SERVO SOLUTION HELPS REDUCE MACHINE SIZE AND COMPLEXITY WHILE STILL

PROVIDING THE PERFORMANCE NEEDED

A servo solution has been introduced that has been designed specifically to harness the performance capabilities of Kollmorgen’s AKD2G servo drive and AKM2G servo motor. With the 2G Motion System, the motor and drive are

precisely matched in every element (e.g. drive switching frequency, commutation algorithms, motor magnetics), avoiding micro- incompatibilities that can occur when engineers select components from various manufacturers, the company states. The result is a system that delivers maximum performance, efficiency and effectiveness in

even the most demanding

applications – from industrial printing, laser cutting, packaging, and robotics, to inspection and measurement, machine tools, winding machines, and food processing. Of further benefit, the solution allows designers to decrease

O

the size, complexity and footprint of the machine, while still getting the power and performance required. The AKM2G can also be dropped into existing machines to increase performance. According to the company, the solution offers increased

dynamic performance; faster development and commissioning; and machine cost savings thanks to the single-cable design, dual-axis drives, and co-engineered options.

FAST MOTOR MODIFICATION KEEPS ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST FERRIES SHIPSHAPE

Operated by Irish Ferries, the RoPax ferry MV Ulysses is one of the largest ferries in the world. Servicing the Dublin to Holyhead route, the vessel has 12 decks for up to 2000 passengers and 1340 cars or 240 trucks. When the operator urgently needed new motors for two of the four azimuth

thrusters – propellers used for sideways manoeuvring in ports – it turned to Menzel for the solution. To meet requirements, the company adapted two 2400kW squirrel-cage

motors from its large inventory of motors and components for many common applications. While the motors chosen are suitable for high humidity environments, Menzel provided them with IP54 protection for maritime applications and made numerous additional adjustments in just a short space of time. The team converted the stock motors from horizontal to vertical operation,

modifying the bearings accordingly, installing new thrust bearings, and producing a special vertical-mounting flange. In addition, they dismantled and re-configured the fan design in order to change the rotational direction, and shortened the shafts and machined them for smaller diameters. To meet the vessel’s mechanical interfaces, the terminal boxes had to be installed in exactly the right position. Furthermore, the customer

provided the water coolers, whilst Menzel modified the stator frames to connect the coolers, implementing cooling type IC 81W. The modifications, testing and delivery were carried out successfully within a tight two to three week deadline.
