COMBINED HEAT & POWER

BREEAM points

The energy saving calculated from the BRUKL report also delivers benefits in terms of BREEAM points. For ‘New Construction’, the 2018 version is the latest, whereas for ‘Refurbishment & Fit out’ the 2014 version is current.

Using Artus instead of FCUs gives a reduction of 23%, equating to a saving of 7% of the overall regulated energy, earning 3 BREEAM points (Refurbishment & fitout 2014).

With Artus Advantage, the energy is reduced for all three elements – cooling, heating and terminal units. The reduction is 60%, equating to a saving of 19% of regulated energy, earning 7 BREEAM points. Artus Advantage outperforms the energy reduction of active chilled beams – this has been confirmed by three separate energy analyses.

Artus Pro control system

Artus Pro is a control system which uses elevated water temperatures to reduce the energy usage of the units, whilst keeping the number of units the same. The cooling capacity of an Artus unit at 14/17 is lower than at 6/12, so in theory, more units would be needed. However using the ‘Artus Pro’ control strategy mitigates this, so by scheduling the chilled water temperature

against the ambient temperature, it is possible to achieve an energy reduction that is almost identical to Artus Advantage without increasing the number of units used. (The numbers for the model building trial layout are shown in the table below.)

Try it yourself

This analysis is for a model building. Readers can try this for themselves on their own buildings, with the example data below. You choose your own values for the chiller SEER and the heat pump SCoP based on the equipment you are using.

The conclusions we are seeing are that by using the low energy, low noise Artus, there are comfort and cost benefits to be made. These benefits are increased when employing the Artus Advantage or Artus Pro system and energy savings, operational cost savings and a reduction in environmental impact are possible.

A dedicated website has been set up which explains the technology behind the development of Artus

https://discoverartus.com and explains more about its applications and features. Airedale International designs and manufactures innovative and high- efficiency cooling solutions from its headquarters in Leeds. It provides solutions for industries including healthcare, commercial education, hospitality and data centres.
