IGEM to develop hydrogen standards as part of £25m government scheme

he Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) has been chosen to develop hydrogen standards for the government’s £25m research and innovation programme. The Hy4Heat programme is a feasibility study into the use of hydrogen for heat in UK homes and businesses aimed at establishing whether it is technically possible, safe and convenient to replace methane with hydrogen in residential and commercial buildings. As part of this project, IGEM will be reviewing all relevant existing standards and bringing together a group of technical specialists to identify knowledge gaps, both in the UK and internationally. This work will help the government to determine whether to proceed to a future community trial. A separate project will look at purity, odorisation and colourisation. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has appointed Arup+ as the programme management

contractor for the Hy4Heat programme to manage and co-ordinate the various work packages, including the standards work.

Three IGEM working groups will look at the following areas: DSEAR, materials, leakage rate and ventilation; appliance location, fluing, installation and air supply; and installation. The work will be peer reviewed by the Hy4Heat project board, industry experts from the Health & Safety Laboratory, DNV GL, and IGEM’s own Technical Coordinating Committee and Gas Utilisation Committee. IGEM Head of Technical Services Ian McCluskey said: “Thanks to our network of senior engineers from every corner of the gas industry, no other organisation is better placed to develop a hydrogen standard for the Hy4Heat project.” IGEM will be delivering this project with industry partners DNV GL, Global Energy Associates, Health & Safety Laboratory, Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) and ICOM Energy Association.

he management team at Morris & Spottiswood has acquired Livingston Mechanical Services in a move to drive M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) growth in line with its ambitious group strategy.

West-Lothian based Livingston Mechanical Services was formed in 1992, delivering heating, ventilation, air- conditioning and plumbing services across Scotland. It will now be managed by the Morris & Spottiswood Group which has offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Leeds and Warrington.

Morris & Spottiswood CEO Jon Dunwell said the buyout will increase its stronghold in northern regions and enhance the firm’s rapidly expanding M&E division. Morris & Spottiswood is a

family-owned business founded in Glasgow in 1925 with further offices in Edinburgh and Perth.

“We have been searching for a partner to strengthen our M&E division for some time as it remains a major growth market across the UK,” said Dunwell. “Our M&E division is growing quickly with a turnover of £20m in 2017. Historically we have always performed better in the ‘electrical’ element of this market, so we have been focusing specifically on bolstering our mechanical team.”

The news will also be a boost to Livingston Mechanical Services’ existing clients who will benefit from a broader range of services across electrical, fit- out, housing and Facilities Management divisions.

CP Electronics wins award for HVAC detector

nergy and lighting controls specialist CP Electronics has won an RAC Cooling Award for its innovative air conditioning controller, the GESM-AC. A battery-powered passive infrared (PIR) sensor, the GESM-AC limits use of air conditioning to times when it’s necessary – and switches it off when it’s not, based on occupancy. CP Electronics won the ‘Air Conditioning Product of the Year - Accessories & Peripherals’ category. Its detector is designed to help bring energy consumption from air conditioning units down.

E The awards were announced on

September 26th at a dinner In London attended by more 600 of the refrigeration and air conditioning industry’s elite.

On CP Electronics’ win and the detector, the RAC Cooling Awards Judging Panel 2018 said: “A simple and practical device to install in rooms with infrared remote- controlled single AC units. The environmental benefits were obvious in saving on energy in cooling unoccupied space.

“It is not unreasonable to believe that a payback within 12 months can be achieved. It could benefit both new built and retrofit markets through the

rapid installation and the subsequent low maintenance.”

Mike Brooks, Marketing Manager of CP Electronics, said: “With our experience in energy efficient lighting controls, our team has applied their knowledge of occupancy detection to the HVAC market. Now, with the GESM-AC, the air conditioning only comes on when required, and there is less onus on facilities and building managers to switch off air conditioning units manually. Sensors can individually regulate specific AC units, thus creating multiple zones of control.”
