chools, businesses and other organisations in rural, off gas grid areas are being advised to ignore misleading marketing claims that ‘oil heating will be outlawed by 2030’, following reports that a number have been targeted by renewable heating providers, encouraging them to switch to alternative systems ahead of the false ‘deadline’.
OFTEC and the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) have been contacted by several educational establishments concerned about their future options for heating after reading the claims made in promotional brochures and online. Although the government’s Clean Growth Strategy, published by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in October 2017, includes a broad ambition to end the installation of new, high carbon fossil fuel heating, no specific

accreditation to join the CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) Heat Networks Consultants Register. CIBSE Heat Networks Consultants are able to advise on the Code of Practice CP1 on Heat Networks, produced by CIBSE and the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) in collaboration with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Rather than simply providing guidance for industry professionals, the code specifies minimum requirements which must be met in order to produce a successful scheme and comply with the code. Accredited Heat Networks Consultants must pass an examination which assesses their knowledge and understanding of the code of practice before they are able to join the register. Carl Humpage, Director at CPW, said: “District heating networks are now seen as one of the key solutions to deliver a low carbon energy economy, particularly in high heat density areas so they need to be designed, built and operated to a high standard to deliver customer and user satisfaction. “Through this new
accreditation, our team are now fully prepared to guide our clients so each project connects with the UK’s future low carbon energy infrastructure.”

misinformation may have been sent to many other organisations and hope that, with greater awareness, the myths can be dispelled.” FPS CEO Guy Pulham said: “For rural businesses to make informed investment plans, they need clear, accurate guidance. It’s essential that government sets out clear decarbonisation policies and takes action to prevent the kind of false claims we’ve highlighted in this case.
“It’s also vital that consumers and rural businesses are consulted as part of debate about the best ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.”
Clyde Gateway marks step forward for SHARC Energy Systems
enabling SHARC Energy Systems to demonstrate its technology as a green solution that could meet the growing appetite for district heating in the UK. The UK renewable energy firm will use its wastewater heat recovery technology to generate the heating and cooling services for the site, in Glasgow, providing an initial 2MW of capacity, with room to expand further as the development grows. SHARC will also be

development company, SHARC Energy Systems, Scottish Water Horizons – a commercial subsidiary of Scottish Water – and Andrew Muirhead Leather – the anchor customer for SHARC’s heating supply. Andrew Muirhead Leather is also keen to explore further innovation for the development, including researching the use of the oil bi-product from its production process which can be filtered to create a biofuel source for the onsite CHP enabling a fully circular waste-to-energy solution for the scheme.
SHARC secured initial funding of £3.7m, with repayable assistance from the Scottish Government’s Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP), supported by the 2014-2020 European Regional Development Fund programmes, matched by commercial loans and investments from the Energy Saving Trust, Clyde Gateway and SHARC International

OFTEC CEO, Paul Rose, said: “Naturally the schools were worried about these false claims which led them to believe they would need to switch to other forms of heating in the near future. This information is untrue.
