BSEE EDUCATION CONTRACT NEWS

REL to undertake electrical work at the new Charter School in Dulwich

R

EL Building Services has been awarded a £2.2m electrical contract for a new school, which forms part of a £multi-million regeneration project in Dulwich, south London.

The Charter School East Dulwich will be located on a site previously occupied by the East Dulwich Community Hospital and

accommodate up to 1,680 pupils aged 11 to 19 and more than 180 teachers and support staff. A new community health centre is also planned on the same land.

Designed by FCB Studios, the school will comprise a teaching block with specialist facilities designed for the study of subjects such as science, design technology, art and design and physical education to A-level. There will also be a sports hall and multi-use games areas.

REL will be responsible for all the electrical works including mains distribution, data, fire alarms, CCTV, and access. The project will need to be delivered within 10 months, ready for handover in August 2018 before the start of the school year. Toby Buckley, REL’s Managing Director said: “This is a large electrical contract which needs to be delivered within a tight timeframe. This will be achieved by working in close collaboration with the wider project team and from a much earlier stage to

help streamline processes and the wider construction programme. This early engagement will ensure that any potential issues are ironed out from the outset, so that we can work more productively as the job progresses. “Our role also includes advising on the buildability and practical elements of the electrical design, so that it can be implemented and installed as quickly and effectively as possible.”

Kier is the main contractor for the school and REL was appointed by Kershaw Mechanical Services. The Charter School adds to a string of recent contracts for REL in the education sector. The team has also been recently appointed to carry out the electrical works for Al Noor Primary School in Ilford, east London, and has completed a project at Woodford County High School for Girls in Essex.

The design and install scheme will entail the installation of 400m of district heating pipe which will stretch from the Horwood energy centre to the CSL building, along with the fitting of new water mains, water reservoir main and IT ducts. The current energy centre will be refurbished with new equipment to ensure it is prepared for the new heat network, with the capacity and space to add further connections in the future. Mike Cooke, Vital Energi Regional Director for the North, said: “We are extremely pleased to begin work on such a fantastic project for such a prestigious educational institution and look forward to delivering the scheme. We have worked with the university to design a bespoke schedule and energy solution that will be most beneficial to them, and relieve any disruption during the construction.”

This project pushes Keele University closer to its ambitions of becoming one of the UK’s most environmentally sustainable campuses.

Vital Energi has previously worked with 22 educational institutions, including the University of Liverpool, the University of St Andrews, and the University of Strathclyde. Work is expected to be completed by mid-August 2018.
