Cases & enclosures
click it into different positions to select the optimum angle of inclination. And again, for enclosures without this option, there is a UNIVERSAL CARRY HANDLE BAR that can be retrofitted.
Every standard enclosure will require some form of customisation – usually apertures in the front and rear panels for controls and interfaces, or slots in the sides or top for extra ventilation in key areas. Legends, logos and graphics are another essential. For this reason, many instrument enclosures are supplied without a standard front panel because a customised alternative will almost certainly be needed. Advances in CNC machining and digital printing have made customisation more affordable in recent years – even on the low-volume orders that typify instrumentation for highly specialist applications. Customised enclosures can be delivered ‘PCB

ready’, able to go straight from Goods In to the production line for installation of the electronics. A quick and cost-effective way to transform the look of a standard enclosure is to specify a custom colour. Some ‘always in stock’ custom colours cost no more than the standard shades. And the enclosure may not need a full makeover. Highlighting the bezels – or even just the snap-on trims – may be all that is needed to add corporate colours. It can be subtle and yet striking. But customisation is not just for the exterior. Other popular options include fixings and inserts such as standoffs, studs, self-clinch nuts and cable tie mounts (though threaded pillars for earthing may already be fitted as standard).
METCASE marketing director Robert Cox says: “You would be surprised how little customisation is
needed to transform a standard housing into a unique enclosure that is ideal for specialist instrumentation.” However, it is vital to start with the right standard enclosure. Some off-the-shelf models can appear similar but may offer very different features and benefits – so it pays to get specialist technical advice as early as possible in the design process. It is also important to partner with an enclosures specialist that can provide all the customisation services in-house. This ensures quality and accountability from start to finish. It also saves time and money – and the environment because the enclosures do not have to be shipped between multiple suppliers.
