ayward Tyler designs, engineers and manufactures specialist motors and
pumps; the company has spent £20 million turning its Luton-based factory into a ‘Centre of Excellence’, with a 30,000sq ft extension, which has more than doubled production capacity. Street has supplied and installed two 40-tonne double girder cranes in the newly extended part of the facility and replaced cranes in the existing part of the building with two 40-tonne and two 25-tonne double girder cranes. All new cranes operate between the existing and new part of the factory.
The new overhead lifting equipment is used throughout the entire manufacturing process, from unloading materials on arrival through to final equipment despatch. Larry Redmond, special projects director
for Hayward Tyler, explains: “The crane equipment is essential for all stages of the process including loading machines, as well as the assembly and testing of our products. As the cranes will be in operation for a considerable time period, one of our key selection criteria was maintainability. The modular design approach used by Street gave us
Flexible guide system for drag chains
With Easy Guide System, Kabelschlepp Metool has developed a new channel system for guiding drag chains as a simple and flexible solution for standard cranes, which is also suitable for other areas of application. On workshop cranes with cable carriers, for example, this omits loose festoon loops. The requirements for modern crane systems are becoming ever more complex: “The focus is on a long service life and uninterrupted availability at maximum load,” explains Peter Sebastian Pütz, head of crane business at Tsubaki Kabelschlepp. “For the development of our new channel system, we placed a special focus on the requirements of standard cranes.” Easy Guide System is a standardised guide system for drag chains that is suitable for
trolley power supply and extended travel lengths of cranes, but also for other applications involving complete cranes and crane sets as well as smaller process cranes. The system features a space saving design as
well as simple and fast installation with few components. The guide channel is available galvanised or as a stainless-steel version. It can be installed vertically, but also horizontally, and it remains flexibly adjustable after installation. The system channel requires no complicated
steel structure and is suitable for all I-beams and box girders. Mounting holes for the drag chain and cable ducts are provided every 850mm. Kabelschlepp Metool offers the same installation bracket for different channel sizes or drag chain types. Permanently installed

hoists and have been designed to optimise space in the new part of the facility, providing a high top hook position to give the best lifting height. They are all operated by radio remote control equipment, which improves safety and ease of operation as it allows the operator to take the optimum position for viewing and controlling lifting. All cranes also feature an infrared anti-collision system to maximise crane safety. The ZX wire rope hoist technology reduces servicing times. An open plan hoist design allows swift and simple access to all key areas of the hoist transmission and structure for all maintenance procedures without any need for major dismantling work. Redmond continues: “The team worked
closely with us throughout the design process to ensure the cranes would be fit for purpose and that there was minimal impact on production when the replacement cranes were installed.”
