FEATURE LOADING BAYS & DOORS

SMART NEW DOOR KEEPS FACTORY SECURE AND EFFICIENT

1.8m/sec. This replaced a manual shutter door for security, which is raised at the start of the day with a second, high- speed, PVC curtained door behind it to control access. The new arrangement from sara LBS increases security without impeding daily operations, while also helping to retain heat and therefore reducing energy bills. Keith Bates, goods inwards inspector at Stuart Turner, explains that the original door, which was also supplied and installed by sara LBS some 20 years ago, had lasted a long time. “It had served us well, but we were beginning to worry about the future availability of spares. So we thought a new door was the best long-term solution and it was an easy decision to work with sara LBS again. It only took two days to install, which was done over a Thursday and Friday with no disruption to normal operations.” Alan Ryder, area sales manager for sara

ara LBS has helped a UK pump manufacturer replace a roller door at

its goods in/out area with a new high speed roller shutter security door. Stuart Turner manufactures and

supplies a range of pump products and solutions from its base in Henley-on- Thames. Its new door is an unusual design, as the aluminium shutter can be opened and closed at speeds up to

LBS, adds: “The high speed shutter arrangement is a very smart looking solution, which fits neatly with Stuart Turner’s image for quality engineering. “It is from our Spiral range of door designs and serves multiple functions, such as keeping warmth in and cold out, while preventing birds and other animals from entering the building. Its metal construction means its security

credentials are excellent, both in terms of actually being a robust barrier to potential thieves and also projecting an image of well protected premises.” The new door is 3.2 metres wide and three metres high, ample for allowing loaded forklift trucks to pass easily through. Because of the busy nature of the warehouse it is important that forklift operators are unimpeded by a slow-moving door, therefore high speed opening and closing was needed. Due to the infrequent arrival and departure of lorries at Stuart Turner, the door must provide security and thermal insulation so a single insulated door option was therefore superior to the common two-door design. Loading Bay Specialists, sara LBS, is known throughout the UK for its commitment to supplying, installing and maintaining loading bay doors and other equipment. It works with clients in a wide range of industries, from manufacturing, warehouse storage and distribution networks, to cleanrooms and food processing applications. Stocking up success with loading bay installation for Costco

In a move designed to increase loading efficiency and operator safety, Costco, has commissioned the installation of a Thorworld Industries’ 12,000kg Deluxe Type 6 Loading Ramp to improve processes at the company’s UK distribution depot in Crick, Northamptonshire. With warehouse club operations in 10 countries, Costco Wholesale is a multi-billion-dollar global retailer and efficient, safe loading practice is of

vital importance to the company, and the assurance that equipment used by operatives meets all relevant regulations is key. Costco’s most recent UK loading bay project has been overseen by build and development company, J.F. Finnegan, and has involved the bespoke

design and manufacture of a specialist Thorworld ramp, capable of facilitating safe transit for forklift vehicles and drivers. Used to enable efficient access from the external yard level to the warehouse, and vice-versa, the ramp has been fitted with 1,000mm high handrails for user support, a floor surface of treadplate decking with a Bimagrip anti-slip surface to prevent slips and skids, and a 10mm nose at the top of the walkway to provide a smooth transition for vehicles accessing and departing the dock. The ramp has been fitted with support legs and is securely bolted to the premises’ concrete yard at both ends. Costco commissioned J.F Finnegan as its development partner, and tasked the firm with sourcing a loading bay solution for its Crick site. Paul Ballantyne, commercial manager at J.F Finnegan, comments:

“Having researched and considered Thorworld’s designs and manufacturing quality, together with the company’s approach to assessing each client’s individual needs, we felt confident that the manufacturer could supply our customer with a loading bay solution that would prove effective. Specialist Thorworld engineers designed an appropriate loading bay structure, and a fully-qualified team demonstrated full expertise in fitting the apparatus on site.” Thorworld Industries www.thorworld.co.uk
