SHOW PREVIEW PPMA SHOW 2017
PPMA Show 2017 returns to reveal the best of manufacturing innovation
The PPMA Show, the UK’s free-to-attend processing and packaging machinery exhibition, returns to the NEC from 26-28 September, 2017 to provide manufacturers with insights into the latest machinery products, technologies and materials
T
he Show is organised by the Processing and Packaging Machinery
Association (PPMA), which comprises the PPMA, British Automation & Robot Association (BARA) and the UK Industrial Vision Association (UKIVA). Serving manufacturers within the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, personal care and FMCG industries to contract packers and more, the Show will offer visitors a chance to see new machinery in action, find inspiration, new ideas and solutions, gain access to potential new suppliers and evaluate and purchase the latest technology as well as talk with the industry’s leading technical experts. Valerio Del Vecchio, head of marketing,
PPMA Group of Associations, comments: “The PPMA Total Show 2016 saw over 1,000 leading packaging and processing machinery manufacturing represented, with more than 7,500 visitors descending on the NEC to find out more. Feedback from visitors attending the 2016 show revealed that the show is the destination to keep up to date with the industry, find inspiration and meet with new suppliers or business partners. We’re looking forward to building on this success when we open the doors to the PPMA Show 2017 on 26 September.”
INDUSTRY LEADERS JOIN LEARNING HUB LINE-UP The PPMA Show 2017 has announced the line-up for its new and improved Learning Hub, providing visitors and exhibitors with insights from influential industry experts and opinion leaders on the industry’s hottest trends and topics. TED speaker and chartered engineer, Peter Anderton, who previously worked as production manager for United Biscuits (UB), will provide helpful insights into how to build a successful team, and he will also share his two-rule approach to great leadership and reveal what packaging chocolate Hobnobs has to do with successful management (26 and 27 September, 12:00pm).
STAND E20 RARUK Automation will use several areas of its stand at PPMA 2017 for new introductions. Among them is a new Robotiq gripper system that enhances the productivity of the company’s Universal Robot six-axis, collaborative robotic arms and a new autonomous mobile robot, designed to change the way businesses move materials inside their facilities. Also new is the Robotiq Dual Gripper, which is
designed specifically for machine tending applications, to speed productivity and relieve employees of repetitive tasks. RARUK is also launching its new MiR200,
which can be used where employees are pushing carts or making deliveries. Completing the stand displays will be IEF
Werner linear motion systems and MAFU disentangling systems, and RARUK is also set to make further announcements before the show.

The PPMA show returns to the NEC Birmingham this year
Also, Forbes McDougall, head of circular economy for Veolia UK and Ireland, will shine a spotlight on packaging recycling faux pas from laminates, coffee cups, plastic bottles and food trays (26 September, 11:00am). Tackling one of the most widely debated and hotly-anticipated topics, Ian Wright, director general of the Food & Drink Federation, will discuss the implications and opportunities of Brexit for the food and drink industry, the UK’s largest manufacturing sector (26 September, 1:30pm). Another topic to be explored within the Learning Hub is robotics and automation. Jeremy Hadall, chief technologist – Robotics & Automation of The Manufacturing Technology Centre, will first address the myths surrounding robotic uptake in the manufacturing industries (27 September, 11:00am). In a second session, Dr. Graham Deacon, robotics research team leader of Ocado Technology, will reveal how Ocado’s robotics research team are using robotic manipulators to pack shopping orders (27 September, 13:30pm). This year’s PPMA Show will also feature all-new entertainment and interactive features, including a computer-controller goalkeeper, known as RoboKeeper, which uses cutting-edge robotics and vision technology, reacting within fractions of a second, making it very difficult to score. Registration to the event is now open and is easier than ever before.

STAND A37 Responding to the coding and handling challenges of the latest ‘lift-the-flap’ style luxury pack sleeve, Rotech will launch its new offline RF Auto sleeve and carton friction feeder at PPMA 2017. This solution for overprinting essential information, such as batch numbers and use-by dates, accurately handles the latest cardboard watch sleeves. Without any human intervention, the system’s patented auto-gate feature adjusts to accommodate the varying thickness of each flat pack to boost coding productivity and eliminate set-up time and sleeve waste. The RF Auto stack-to-stack feeder works using a non-contact thermal inkjet coder offering a complete offline overprinting solution. For the first time, the new auto-gate function eliminates the need to make manual adjustments to handle cartons of different thicknesses, minimising set- up downtime in coding operations.
STAND A42
Fortress Technology will unveil how metal detection sensitivity can deliver optimal food safety, whilst helping to eradicate false product rejects. Forming the centrepiece of the company’s display is the first UK live demonstration of its new waste-reducing, triple-lane, multi-aperture metal detector. Each conveyor has its own BRC-approved reject system. This puts a stop to an entire row of good product being rejected and wasted. Fortress will also showcase three other key
applications on its PPMA stand. These include a Stealth pipeline metal detector equipped with new Halo2 automatic test technology, an incline feed gravity metal detector, plus a horizontal Interceptor conveyor system to optimise sensitivity and inspection performance on notoriously difficult wet and conductive products like meat, dairy, ready meal and bakery items.
