When was the last time you were in a classroom? Does the very idea of being ‘taught’ again put you in mind of itchy school uniforms, blackboards, refectories that smell of cabbage and other memories long consigned to the dustbin of history?

ear not – for ‘training’ has come a long way from being lectured at in a drowsy seminar room or the touchy feely trust exercises that characterised workplace bonding of the last few decades. The fact is that many companies, certainly forward- thinking ones, consider training to be an investment that pays back in spades. This issue of Franchisor News looks at training in the franchise industry – not just the job training that a new franchisee inevitably needs in order to carry out their service / sell the goods the brand specialises in, but a more holistic and inclusive approach, the ongoing and developmental training that exercises the mind and spirit and will reap rewards for all parties. On pages 28-29 there is an interview with Fiona and Shaun Thomson, who represent the Sandler franchise brand in the UK as well as an in-depth look at who is leading the way in training for their franchisees and what the experts recommend for the industry as a whole (see pages 24-27).

Also in this issue are franchisees who are themselves barely out of the classroom and making it big – young investors who aren’t letting a lack of years of experience hinder their meteoric progress. Plus top-class HR, legal and operational advice from a host of advisors to the franchise industry as well as news and views and our regular spotlight abroad. Enjoy!
