Looking to expand your franchise? Training provides your franchisees with a wealth of knowledge and information to help your business grow, finds Flora Neighbour


T


here are many important responsibilities that befall a franchisor (particularly a new one), but none quite as vital than training their franchisees. Effective training can constitute


the very pulse of a well-functioning business, updating and developing the training programme is key to growing and shaping a company. These programmes should continue to follow the franchisee throughout their career in order to ensure the business is successful, profi table and likely to result in a harmonious franchisor-franchisee relationship. Training franchisees should be at the heart of any franchise business. The better the training, the better a franchise will run, while a continuous coaching programme will help the business stay ahead of the competition and lay the foundations to become, and remain, a market leader.


Training at the forefront – the franchisors’ stories Unsurprisingly, advice and support are key elements in becoming a franchisee with the kind of global recognition Subway can boast. The company offers a two-week course, with 60 hours spent in the classroom and more than 30 hours spent on the ground. Alan Whitehead, the UK Subway course leader, comments: “It is important for anyone starting a new business that they start on the right foot. Coaching can seem overwhelming, whether you’re a franchisor or franchisee. Making sure you have the right information and deliver it clearly and concisely can seem daunting, but this doesn’t have to be the case – it doesn’t have to feel like a lecture. “We work with our partners from the outset,” says Lisa Stead, operations manager at Platinum Property Partner. “We help them establish their short-, medium- and long-term fi nancial and life goals (reviewed annually) which helps us to pair them with a
