Careers in Genomics
No matter your background — whether you have GCSEs, NVQs, a science degree, or a PhD — there's a path into genomic healthcare for you. Training is available at every level, and once you are in the field, further professional development opportunities can be accessed to help advance your career.
Clinical Scientists
Clinical scientists provide expert knowledge to the genomic service-users. They handle referrals, request tests, analyse results, and also write reports. Senior scientists are not always involved in research, they more take on management and leadership positions within the genomics service and provide advice and guidance to junior staff members.
Entry Requirements
• Postgraduate training in genomic science (e.g., NHS Scientist Training Programme)
• Higher Specialist Scientist Training programme • FRCPath (either in Molecular Diagnostics (for cancer scientists) or Genomics (for rare disease) for consultant level
Genetic Technologists
Our technical team processes samples and operates testing equipment in the lab. Roles include genetic technologists and laboratory assistants. Training is mostly on-the-job, where you learn to prepare DNA for sequencing and run genomic tests.
Entry Requirements
• Training is mostly on-the-job in the lab • Entry possible at various levels depending on education and experience
• A science-related degree is required for entry at higher levels
Bioinformaticians
Bioinformaticians use IT to analyse biological and medical data. They help make sense of genomic data to diagnose patients or find the best treatment for cancer. They work closely with clinical scientists and clinicians.
Entry Requirements
• Degree in biology, computer science, or a related field • NHS Scientist Training Programme • Registration as a clinical scientist through specific training or an accredited portfolio
Genetic Counsellors
Genetic counsellors help patients understand and make decisions about their genetic health. They assess family history, order tests, explain results, and provide emotional support.
Entry Requirements
• Background in science (e.g., genetics, psychology) or nursing
• NHS Scientist Training Programme • Postgraduate Master’s degree in genetic counselling
Clinical Geneticists
Clinical geneticists are doctors who specialise in genetic disorders. They diagnose and manage conditions like inherited cancers, birth defects, and learning disabilities. They work with genetic counsellors and lab scientists to provide care and interpret test results.
• Medical degree with specialisation in genetics Entry Requirements
