About us
We’re an energy company and the largest electricity transmission and distribution business in the UK. We keep people connected and society moving. Across England and Wales, we Bring Energy to Life and are leading the transformation towards a greener future, dreaming bigger to bring a more affordable energy future to everyone – a powerful goal we’re empowered to achieve. With the support we need to get things done, and the time to learn and grow, our path to success is truly supercharged. Together, we’re exploring the challenging questions of tomorrow and building a better future.
Opportunities
Apprenticeships range from 24-months to 60-months in length (dependent on the programme) and are selected and built with our apprentices in mind and provide a high-quality and enriching experience from day one. Whether you’re one of our substation engineers working at one of our high voltage substations or an offi ce-based staff member analysing data for our Strategy and Regulation Department, we equip you with industry-recognised experience, knowledge, skills and behaviours, developed within high-quality off- and on-the-job learning experiences.
Career progression
All apprentices complete role-specifi c training alongside relevant qualifi cations. But this is just part of your development – there are a variety of opportunities to broaden your experience, including: volunteering as an ambassador through our Grid for Good programme, being part of our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) or promoting National Grid at external events. We’re developing you for a super-powered career that lasts,
and it’s one we don’t put a ceiling on. The sky’s the limit and you get to choose how high you y – if you put the work in, you could be running the company one day! Many managers and leaders that joined us as apprentices now run their own teams and departments.
Looking for
Candidate profi le: Focussing on strengths, not experience, we value talent and natural abilities, unlike traditional, competency- based interviews centred on past experiences and qualifi cations. With a strengths-based approach, we aim to identify what energises and motivates you, and gauge how you’ll utilise your skills in a role – this helps to eliminate bias towards students with more experience and creates a fairer opportunity for everyone.
Entry requirements: Advanced Apprenticeships are for those aged 16+ who are post-GCSE, whilst Higher Apprenticeships are for those at 18+ who are post- A-Level. You’ll do a mix of study and work over 3-4 years to gain qualifi cations and valuable hands-on work experience – a fantastic way to continue studying and getting started on your career all whilst earning a salary!
