Scenario #2
• You find 4-year-old Jackson with the string of his brother’s yo-yo wrapped around his neck. He is lying face-up on the floor. His lips are blue and he is not responsive. You are alone.
Scenario #3
• You go outside and find 2-year-old Isabella face-down in the wading pool. The water is 6 inches deep. A neighbor is with you.
Note to Instructor: How to correct technique errors that participants often make
1. No head/neck support on turn from facedown to face-up
Review how to carefully roll child toward you supporting head and neck.
2. Poor chin-lift: fingers positioned on soft tissue under chin, not jawbone
Demonstrate putting two fingers on jawbone and lifting up.
3. Unable to open airway by adequate head-tilt/chin-lift (under-tilted)
Slightly bigger tilt may work. 4. Seal not created
Mouth of rescuer should cover child’s mouth with nose pinched closed.
5. Rescue breaths too forceful It should be a little breath; the chest just barely needs to rise.
6. Wrong hand placement
Heel of one hand in center of chest between nipples. Heel of other hand on top of first hand.
7. Moves hands Hands stay on chest between pushes.
8. Wrong delivery Push hard and fast.
9. Pressure not released Chest should return to normal after each push.
10. Wrong rate Correct rate is 100-120 compressions per minute.
