Child CPR GUIDED DISCUSSION


Note to Instructor Use careful infection control techniques! Participants with cold sores may not practice CPR on manikins. Participants with long hair should pull their hair back. No chewing gum, food, or drinks. Refer to your organization’s Infection Control and Equipment Maintenance policies and procedures.


As Safe Sitter® program participants, you will learn how to do CPR on


a child and infant, but you won’t practice adult CPR. You will learn CPR skills, but you won’t be officially certified in CPR.


Turn to page 36 in your booklet.


• What would a child look like who needed CPR? (Child would be limp, blue, and motionless.) [Point out that CPR intervention should not be given unless it is needed. Children need CPR if they are unconscious and not breathing.]


• What do the letters C-P-R stand for? (C – Cardio=Heart; P – Pulmonary=Lungs; R – Resuscitation=Rescue)

DEMONSTRATION AND PRACTICE:


Now let’s go through the steps of how to rescue a child who needs CPR. Follow along with me with your own manikin. [Read each step as participants practice on their manikins. Emphasize the bulleted points as you discuss. Refer to graphics on page 37 if needed.]


Step 1. Tap the child’s shoulder and call out the child’s name. Check to see if the child responds—moves, speaks, blinks, or reacts to you.


• To minimize the risk of unnecessary intervention by an anxious rescuer, it’s important to check if the child responds before giving CPR.


Step 2. If child doesn’t respond, and you have a cell phone with you, call 9-1-1, put the phone on speakerphone, and place the phone on the ground so that your hands are free.


• If you do not have a cell phone, ask anyone who can to call 9-1-1 for help. A spouse, child’s sibling, or someone else in the home may be able to call 9-1-1.
