Note to Instructor: How to correct technique errors that participants often make
Spending time with each participant during manikin practice is crucial to giving the participants the confidence to actually use the technique in real life. Your role is to point out what they’re doing well and gently correct any technique error.
Common Errors:
1. Legs not in ramp position Sit on edge of chair with legs straightened out.
2. Poor head support Put hand in V position.
3. Poor back blow technique
Check hand position. Identify landmarks on the back (between infant’s shoulder blades). Check delivery. Demonstrate technique.
4. Poor turn Demonstrate sandwich turn and roll for head/neck support.
5. Poor chest thrust technique
Check finger position. Fingers need to be in line with the breastbone—not crossways. Check delivery. Chest thrusts must be quick and downward. Check for maintained finger contact between chest thrusts.
6. Head not kept down Check that head is lower than chest.
