Scenario #3
• 6-year-old Carlos is eating lemon drops that you gave him and coughs. Your spouse is with you.
Note to Instructor: How to correct technique errors that participants often make
Spending time with each participant during manikin practice is crucial to giving the participants the confidence to actually use the technique in real life. Your role is to point out what they’re doing well and gently correct any technique error.
Common errors:
1. Thumb tucked inside fist Demonstrate thumb outside fist.
2. Knuckles facing out
Demonstrate base knuckles (large knuckles where fingers join hand) facing up toward ceiling.
3. Fist placed too high or too low
Place fist above belly button and well below lower tip of breastbone.
4. Forearms too high, touching ribs Forearms do not touch ribs.
5. Abdominal thrusts delivered too slowly (as a squeeze, not a cough) or too gently (weak, ineffective, not adequate to mimic a strong cough)
Deliver quick forceful thrusts in an inward and upward direction.
