VIRAL TIKTOK SHINES POSITIVE LIGHT ON SENIOR LIVING

“SENIOR LIVING MEETS TIKTOK”

Now there’s a statement that might have you doing a second take. What was just another day at the StoryPoint senior living community in Saline, Michigan, became a viral moment on TikTok, one of the largest and fastest growing social media platforms.

Heading into January 2022, Life Enrichment Director, Erin Griffiths, and VP of Marketing, Irina Olgart, had a “Winter Wonderland” activities theme in mind for StoryPoint residents that month. The wintery theme anticipated snowfall for building igloos, snowball fights, and tubing, which wasn’t too much to ask of Michigan in January. Things didn’t go as planned when tubing day approached and there was no snow in sight. That didn’t stop Griffiths and Olgart from allowing residents to have a little fun.

After a few minutes of brainstorming, snow tubing became carpet tubing. Residents hopped on tubes and got dragged around the carpet inside the StoryPoint community. The moment was too good not to document, so Erin and StoryPoint team members pulled out their smartphones and recorded residents having the time of their lives. They posted the compilation of clips to StoryPoint’s TikTok account–the results were astounding. Almost immediately, the video caught the attention of millions of TikTok and Instagram users worldwide. The video also caught the attention of country music star, Walker Hayes, whose song, “Fancy Like” is featured in the video. Hayes, who has nearly one million followers, shared the video on Instagram and commented on StoryPoint’s video, as well. “That was definitely something that I think had us all really, really excited,” Griffiths said.

By venturing out into the world of TikTok, a platform primarily for younger audiences, the team at StoryPoint is bridging the gap between generations. They are breaking the barriers of seniors housing on a platform where young people spend a lot of their time. “I think the exciting part,” Olgart says, “was that you did have the teenagers and the 20 and 30-year-olds that were saying, ‘I’d live there. I’d work there. That looks like a cool place to be.’”
