ASPIRING TO BE INSPIRING:

for ourselves, on how to be an inspirational leader; how to rise to this occasion; and how to catch lightning in a bottle.

THE ATTRIBUTES OF AN INSPIRATIONAL LEADER

By James Lee Co-Founder & CEO, Bella Groves

Any leader can respond to their work environment. Only a special kind of leader can influence their environment. The senior living industry – like any other – can fall into the trap of associating every manager in every role with the title “leader”. However, we intuitively know this, that not every manager is, in fact, a leader. Even fewer could be genuinely considered an inspirational one.

Is it okay to aspire to inspire? If so - what are the attributes of an inspirational leader? This moment of our industry – a clear inflection point between what was and what shall be – beckons us all to give clarity and instruction, if not for others than at least

Personality, charm, articulation… charisma. They sound wonderful don’t they? Yet, there is no correlation between these attributes and an effective leader. Inspiring others is less about personality traits and far more about the aim of their leadership: • Is there a clear and common cause for which we are all working? (Why)

• Is there a clear direction toward the changed state of things we wish to create? (Where)

• Is there a clear set of guidelines of how to behave on this team? (How)

• Is there a clear timeline we have all agreed to achieve our goals together? (When)

The inspirational leader doesn’t lead by offering inspirational leadership quotes. But in the spirit of irony, in a very meta sort of way, let me offer a quote to you to drive this point home.

Inspirational leaders don’t create motivation. They curate motivation.
