Standupto these bullies

Re: “Avoid this (Whalley) pub car park warning” (Valley ' Views, October 22nd) -I was disappointed to read that once again the parking bullies, in this case Civil Enforcement Ltd, have had their hands in the pockets of law abiding members of our community. They are not at all civil, they are thieves - and the sooner we realise it the better. A fewyears ago I stood up to a similar firm and I would do it . again tomorrow.

As in this case, they tried to scare me into paying them a disproportionate charge for a genuine error. These firms cannot fine you, only local councils with statu tory powers can do so. The Parking Charge Notice is a made up term. It is not a fine. It is a suggestion of trespass, a minor breach of contract. So make a stand. Ifyou do, you may then get increasingly threatening letters with underlined text. Don’t be intimidated. Anyone can underline words. Next, they will send more letters (yawn) and probably eventually give up. ' Worst case you get an invita tion to a small claims court. More bullying. Take to the stand. They will not turn up and if they do there is a very high probability theywilllose. Unfortunately, up and down out country every year tens of millions of pounds of our hard earned money is handed over in broad daylight to these modern day highway robbers. So are they legal? Yes, unfortu nately, they are legally operat ing organisations. They pay large amounts of money to owners of car parks, in order to operate them and maximise their investment by preying on the elderly and vulnerable/ Are they ethical? No, they are not ethical companies. They are un-organic, pesticide covered, anti-fair trade corpo rate greed-mongers. Let’s take last week’s exam ple: a customer who paid for a ticket, made a genuine typing error when entering a car registration number into a particularly tiny keyboard, is hounded for £60. This is a scandal. Let’s take another example. You legally park, and pay for

your ticket, but your doctors appointment runs overby a few minutes. If an hour’s stay costs £3, then

a five-minute overstay should cos t a maximum of £5 or £10. How can it cost £60 or £100? It is entirely disproportionate. In my view there should be a legally enforceable maximum national rate that these firms can charge of, let’s say, £10 an hour. So in conclusion, I challenge anyone toa)findaphone number for one of these com panies b) ask them for a copy of their complaints handling procedure c) find out who owns these companies. You may struggle to do any of these because they are the worst type of bullies, the ones that run away when you stand up to them because they are spineless, opportunist thugs who try to take advantage of anyone who is intimidated by their cowardly tactics. POLITICS

Yes, the cuts do have an impact I am disgusted that County Coun. Alan Schofield has used my letter about library cuts as a stick to beat Labour council lors at LCC. Who is he kidding? Let us be clear on this. The misguided policy of aus terity is a Tory creation and local government cuts are ultimately the fault of the party of Nigel Evans and Coun. Schofield. In view of Mr Evans’ recent outburst about the “inad equate” police protection af forded him and his colleagues at the recent Tory party con ference in Manchester, per haps someone should remind our Ribble Valley MP that there are no police as his party has axed them. Yes, Mr Evans, believe it or not, cuts do have an actual impact in the real world.

Woodn’tit be nice...

As someone who drives a lot. . around the Ribble Valley for a living, I obviously take note of various things that catch my

eye. For a start, the state of many of the roads are an abso

lute disgrace. Woone Lane, heading towards Primrose Bridge, mustbeone of the worst roads in the Val ley. The road coming into West Bradford from Pimlico and the road through West Bradford on to Grindleton and down to Sawley must be a nightmare for people who have to travel on them on a daily basis. Unlike Main Street in Grindle ton, there must be no one of significant importance living on these routes or they would, I am sure, have received the same treatment. MaybeiftherecentTourof ■ Britain cycle race had been go ing on these routes then this, too, would have given cause to do something about them. Finally, I come to the subject of debris along the roadside. No I don’t mean the bottles, cans, fast food bags of waste paper etc that the morons see fit to discard from their cars, but the amount of branches and wood in general that we see on the grass verges that gives the area a very untidy look. We are fortunate to live in what is supposed to be an Area of Outstanding Beauty, but visitors to the area must be scratching their heads at times wondering how it can be described as such. This is the perfect time, com ing up to Bonfire Night, for the council or whoever to spend a few days driving around the area and collecting a lot of the dead wood/fallen branches- believe me there is a lot lying at the roadside. This would not only tidy the . area, but would be a supply of fuel for the Castle or a local vil- lage bonfire. Take a look at the roadside next timeyou are travelling between traffic lights at Blue bell Wood, Whalley, and the big roundabout on the A59 and you will see enough there for a good bonfire alone. I hope someone takes notice, as this is the ideal time over the next couple of weeks to kill two birds with one stone. Mr R. Kay

Are there no houses to be found for the first-time buyer?

Is this problem all over the';^S$§

country or just in a certain small part of London? • When I look at Clitheroe 1 can find what could only be described as perfect first time buyer homes at less than

£100,000, considerably below what they tell us is the average price for this type of house. • Also from what I can see from

the pictures, they do not need any work doing to them before ' moving in.

This must be a big bonus. So the question is, are “the people that know” just wrong or is more likely that the home sell ers of Clitheroe live in the real world; less than average pric es, no need of repair, just good Lancashire common sense. MsI.M.Speak

Increase nurse training places

Earlier this year, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) warned of a crisis looming in health services. Nurses recruited from outside the European Eco nomic Area since 2011 faced being removed from the country if they were not earn ing at least £35,000 after six years as part of changes to immigration laws. Common sense has now pre vailed. The Government has announced that nursing will be placed on the list of professions exempt from this rule - a victory for nurses and, more importantly, patients. But this change of stance is only temporary, and while it will help in recruiting nurses and alleviate staff shortages in the short-term we need to look further ahead. The RCN wants this common sense approach extended to the training and retaining ofmorenursesinthe longer term. The Government must significantly increase student nurse training places so our patients are no longer at the mercy of global workforce trends.
