Loved and remembered always.
St John’s RC Primary School and St Augustine’s RC High School pupil explained: “The majority of people I speak to ' are quite simply unaware of what the consequences are of buying a ticket to a dolphin show/swim wi th dolphin pro gramme. “After I have explained
what buying that ticket ac tually funds most people are shocked, horrified and are happy to pledge to never buy a ticket to see dolphins or whales in captivity." Taiji, is a small fishing vil
lage in Japan, where every morningbetweenSeptember and March, 50 to 100 fisher men go out hunting for dol phins by herding them into the cove. Some are sold for the cap
tive industry in locations all around the world including Tenerife, Turkey and Egypt, while the rest are slaughtered to be used for meat. “It is well known that this meat is heavily contaminated

with mercury and is unfit for human consumption. “Much of it stands in freez
ers, is used in pet food and fer tilizers or is sold labelled as whale meat. “Only around one per cent
of the people of Japan eat dol phin meat,” explained Julie, who has loved dolphins ever since a young age. She even has a dolphin tattoo on her hand and uses this as a conver sation starter for the plight of the animals. A fisherman makes around
$32,000 for a live dolphin, a trained dolphin can be sold for up to $150,000 - while a dead dolphin sold for meat is worth around $500. “In this year’s quota up to
1,873 dolphins can be taken in what are known as ‘drive hunts’ for captivity or slaugh ter. The massive profits made by the sale of a trained dolphin funds the ‘drive hunts’,” con-, tinued Julie. Ric O’Barry, who has been visiting the cove in Tai
ji for 13 years in an attempt to bring the “drive hunts" to the world’s attention, featured in the award winning documen tary The Cove. Julie has followed Ric
and the Dolphin Project for several years and has at tended protests outside the Japanese Embassy in London with her daughter Leah (15), who attends St Augustine’s, her childhood friends Anne- Marie Cattermole and Louise Drinkwater, and hundreds of other people.. The former Stonyhurst College swimming teacher
Campaigner Julie Watson at a recent protest outside the Japanese Em bassy in London with Ric O' Barry, (s)
and lifeguard at Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe, Julie, who used to swim for Clitheroe Masters before taking over as coach, will document, record and raise awareness of what’s happening at the Taiji cove while in Japan. Julie, who is starting a new
job as an ambulance care as sistant for the North West Ambulance Service once she returns from Japan, will, like
all dolphin project cove moni tor volunteers, self-fund her trip. To help towards Julie’s trip
