TheXC90isabigbeast.At nearly five metres long, it is eclipsed by very fewscarson the road.
Yet it handles like a sports
' car, whipping to 6omph in under eight seconds and on to i37mph, where legal. And more importantly, perhaps, it manages more
• than 44mpg around town and more than simpg on a run - figures which wouldn’t disgrace a car half its size. Volvo is proud of its new
second-generation XC90 and so it should be. It replaces the first generation which sold for 13 years (2002 to 2015) - more
r thantwicethelifespanofmost modern motors. You see, Volvo isn’t a com
pany which rushes into things. Rather, it takes its time to make sure it does it right. The SUV (sports utility
vehicle) market was already well-established when Volvo came along with the XC90 in
2002 but such was the mod el’s build quality, styling, abil ity and competitive pricing, it succeeded against many of its longer-established rivals. And the newmodel-clean
er, greener and much, much more luxurious - seems well- positioned to challenge Audi Q7, BMW X5 and the Range Rover. It feels light; sporty and
well-planted. It’s a well- balanced car and it hides its mass well. On the road, it feels like a
much smaller vehicle, yet it has seats for seven and the boot is 3i4litres rising to 1,868 litres with the boot down. Inside, one of the most in
teresting features is the tablet- style panel inthe dash. This system, labelled Sensus. con trols all the mqjorfunctions of the vehicle, from the ‘infotain ment’, phone, navigation and connectivity features. The car has a formidable array of safety features, as
. you might expect from Volvo, under the IntelliSafe banner. They include energy-absorb ent seats, City Safety auto-
WKS-r-.v
versing sensors, parking sys tems and cruise control as standard. The XC90 is the first car to
be powered solely by Volvo’s new Drive-E engine range. Available to order with either an all-wheel-drive (AWD) D5 225bhp diesel, an AWD T6 320hp petrol or an AWD T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid with400bhp. Unusually for such a big
braking, Queue Assist and a self-parking system. . ThenewXCgoismorethan
just arefresh. It’s a very differ ent model to the previous gen eration model and is built on a new platform.
Principle changes have
been the introduction into the UK of the 320hp T6 pet rol engine and the addition in the availability of the auxiliary, heater on the D5. The auxilia ry heater, standard on the T8
Twin Engine, allows the driv er to pre-set the cabin to a set temperature. As you might.expect for
a limousine-style SUV, it is well-equipped with climate control, stability systems, re
vehicle, the engines are rela tively small but they are strong and economical. The XC90 has already won
awards. It was named Car of the Year 2015 and Large SUV of the Year category winner at
■ this year’s Auto Express New Car Awards.

CUTHER0EADVERT1SER&TIMES I McLaren's desert special
McLaren has unveiled aspe- cial edition 650S supercar designedforand to besold in the Middle East only.
The 650S Spider A1 Sahara 79, named partly after a transla tion of the Arabic word for ‘desert’, is designed to look its best in the unique light and surroundingsofthecountries in which it will be sold. The ‘white gold’paint uses
actual flecks of 24-carat gold to achieve a shimmering look. Gold’s atomic number is 79, which forms the second part ofthe model name. Performance and power
remain the same as standard, with 64ibhp and soolb/ftof torque from the monstrous turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 en gine. Inside, black and almond
white upholstery is accented by contrasting stitching, while the gold-flecked A1 Sahara 79 paint finish is extended to the steering wheel, centre console and door panels. Ian Gorsuch, regional di
rector Middle East & Africa, McLaren Automotive said: ' “McLarenAutomotiveisatrue pioneer in its approach to the
Royal reception for Aston documentary
Aston Martin recently screened a documentary on the creation of the DB10 Bond Car at a drive-in cin ema in the Great Court of Blenheim Palace. The exclusive event,
design and development of high-performance sports and supercars, and the 650S Spi der A1 Sahara79 is evidence of that. This truly unique project - our first in the Middle East - is inspired by a region that is home to some of our most loyal customers.” The car was developed
by McLaren Special Opera tions (MSO), the arm of the
company responsible for be spoke design and engineering. Paul Mackenzie, executive
director at McLaren Special Operations added: “The A1 Sa hara 79 project offered an ex citing opportunity to create a truly bespoke car inspired by the rich history and culture of the Middle Eastern region, which is dominated by the beauty of the desert.
“It was fascinating to hear
the feedback from McLaren owners, and to then assimi late this into a truly bespoke project that reflected the re gion’s long history of luxury and craftsmanship - which are the foundations of the MSO brand.” The price for all this starts
at 1,456,308 Emirati Dirham (AED), or around £260,400.
where all attendees arrived in Aston Martins, demon strated the effort, imagi nation and expertise that went into creating the DB10. Starting from the concept stages all the way through to after the filming of Spectre, the documentary gave viewers unparalleled access to every part of the process. Only 10 DB10 cars will
ever be made, making it one ofthe most coveted, but unattainable, vehicles ever
produced by the legendary British car maker. Created as a bespoke
project for the Spectre James Bond film, the DB10 is a fully working, high- performance supercar - described by designers as “brute in a suit”. The screening took place
against the stunning back drop of Blenheim Palace, where some filming for Spectre took place.
