Hundreds of jobs aresetto be axed by Lancashire County Council and much-loved serv ices ended in a massive shake- up of council provision.
Budget proposals announced this week show how Lanca shire County Council plans to save £6501. over the next two years, resulting in the loss of anestimated367fulltimejobs. These posts will go on top of
hundreds already agreed and council leader County Coun. Jennifer Mein has warned that some will be compulsory. • Shesaid: “Therealityofour
financial situation is such that we will have to use the bulk of our reserves just to balance the budget over the next two years. And by 2017/18, we will onlyjust have enough money to pay for our statutory serv ices. “The scale of the challenge
means that we will have to make ever more difficult de cisions. We will do all that we can, and are targeting our re sources towards those with the greatest need, but we will have to reduce or stop servic es and people will notice the difference. Our priority w i ll ' remain to protect the most vulnerable people in commu nities across Lancashire.” The job losses would be in

Residents advised to register to vote now
Ribble Valley residents who
have notregistered to vote are advised to do so by December 1st.
Sweeping changes to the
way residents registered to vote were introduced last summer.
Previously, one person in
every household was respon sible for registering everyone who lived at their address. But under the news sys
tem, called Individual Elec toral Registration, or 1ER, each person is now required toregistertovoteindividually, rather than by household. Residents were automati cally transferred from the old
to the new register during a transition period. But the transition period
ends on December 1, after which residents who have not registered under IER will be removed. IER is the biggest change
to electoral registration for more than a century and aims to make registration more secure, simpler and faster, while protecting against vot ing fraud. Ribble Valley Borough
Council’s electoral and licens ing officer, Jane Horsfield, said: “Ribble Valley residents have received letters and re minder letters outlining the
newsysteminrecentmonths, but some have still not regis tered.” She added: “We are urging
them to complete their online registration by December 1st, or they will be removed from the register and until they reg ister under IER will lose their right to yote.” . Further information about
the changes to the electoral registration are available from Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil’s electoral registration team by telephoning 01200 414411. Any residents wishing to
register online should visit:
