Those two devastating sentenc es from a consultant seemed to sum up how life would be for Paul Atkinson who suffered brain damage whenhewasjust a few days old. But the medic who made
those predictions 34 years ago could not have been more wrong. For Paul’s family did not
heed the advice. In fact they went the opposite way, follow ing the Christian motto that “children are to be nurtured in love, security and truth.” And through that careful

nurturing, care and love, Paul’s talent as an artist has shone through and he has produced some thought provoking and in teresting artwork based on Bi ble stories such as the feeding of the 5,000, the Last Supper and Joseph’s coat of many colours. These have now been repro
duced as canvas pictures and on cushion covers thanks'to Paul’s mum, Val who, with the help of friends and a business ac quaintance set up the venture, Pictures to Ponder. A website has been set up where you can
view a full range of products in spired by Paul’s work. Although he moved to Ches
ter eight years with his fam ily, Paul grew up in Mitton and comes home to the Ribble Valley often tostaywithGeoffandAnn Dearden who have provided res pite care for him since he was a child at their home in Wad- dington. Ann said: “ We love having
Paul to stay, he is like one of the family now and hecomestostay with us as a friend.” Over theyears Paul has been
helped by his carer, Carol, who has kept him active, entertained and educated forone day a week for 10 years. During that time she has coaxed him through sewing, sticking, cutting, past ing, weaving, ball games, fish ing, accessing pictures in books and on the computer. It has been a case of trial
and error trying to unlock what makes Paul react as he does not communicate well through lan guage and has very short term memory. But it is clear that Paul is in
terested in people as all his pic tures centre around people and their life circumstances. Seeing these wonderful pictures that Paul has created proves that he really is a living example of the motto that love conquers all. To view Paul’s work go to
