gj Williams, who lives in the cottages on the riverside between Grindleton and Sawley, said: “Although none of the houses were affected by the flooding, some residents said it was the highest they had seen it in nearly 40 years.” 'And it was a busy weekend
for emergency service s personnel who were either rescuing people from the floods or building flood defences. _ ’

Sunday morning, threeyoung women in their twenties had to be rescued when their car became submerged in flood | water.

C l ith e ro e , Nelson and Penwortham fire stations were called out to Sawley Road, Sawley, to rescue the women at 1-25 am. Firefighters said the car
was stuck in flood water up to the door handles and crews used lifejackets arid chimney rods to rescue the women. Dave McGrath, watch
manager at Cjitheroe Fire Station said: “Our firefighters wore life jackets and used feeling sticks as the water was up to their waists.”
