Alison and architect Dan Gib son set up the social business Class Of Your Own Ltd in May 2009 to provide hands-on workshops and a creative cur riculum “Design, Engineer, Construct!” focused on Sci ence, Technology, Engineer ing and Maths subjects for schools and colleges. . Based at St Nicholas Hall, Sabden, Alison is now in the running for a Daily Mir ror “Hero of Construction" award for the North West re gion, which is part of the an nual pride of Construction Awards run by the Construc tion Industry Training Board. Alison gave up her profes
sional job as a land surveyor in 2008, and worked with Liv erpool John Moores Univer sity to learn about secondary education. She ploughed personal sav
ings into the project and over came significant barriers to get Class OfYour Own’s brand new set of qualifications into schools within three years.

In addition to develop
ing further education pro grammes for specialised fields, Alison has launched a competition for British schoolchildren to design a school for a Ugandan village which has been racked by war. She hopes the winning design might even be built next year. Alison, mother o f a teen
age daughter, said: “I believe it’s about time that schools saw construction as a fantas tic destination for all students. . “Some schools seem to
think construction is for kids who have no hope for anything else, but there are wonderful career opportunities in con struction engineering, archi tecture and surveying.” The CITB ceremony is on
November 25th at London’s Natural History Museum. Mick Hamill, CITB north
region delivery manager, said: “Alison is a great exam ple of what the Pride of Con struction awardsare designed
• to celebrate-talented, hard working people helping to improve communities and inspire the next generation of workers.” Carole Teacher, business
development director for Class of Your. Own, said: “Ali son’s aim is to make a differ ence: a difference to the lives and aspirations ofyoungsters from all walks of life, a differ ence to the way construction is perceived by teachers and parents and a difference to the future of our industry.”
