role he played on board the Wilton as a gun loader and depth charge loader - an ex perience he described as ‘rough*. He added: ‘ I made around
four or five trips, usually sail ing from Scapa Flow to Mur
mansk and Archangel in Russia. ‘ It was a rough time. We
were bombed from the air and by U-boats nearly all the way once we left British waters. ‘ It was extremely cold and we had a few close shaves but
it was so important. We were taking arms and food out to the Russians and taking their timber back to Britain. “The convoys helped the'
Russians to beat the Germans in the East so it was vital to the
war effort.” AftertheArcticoperation,
Jim’s ship served in the Medi terranean, helping in the Sic ily and North Africa landings, as well as the famed Santa Marija Convoy to Malta as part of Operation Pedestal. In a speech to the veter
ans of the Arctic Convoys, the Russian Ambassador Dr Alex ander Yakovenko said: “It is a huge privilege forme to thank you on behalf of the Russian Government for the invalua ble contribution you andyour comrades-in-arms made to the defeat of Nazi Germany. “What you did yoyears ago,
taking part in what Sir Win ston Churchill rightly called ‘the worst journey in the world’, was extraordinary even amongwhatis considered to be beyond the call of duty. “Thousands of Allied
seamen lost their lives as the British ships sailed in the unwelcoming, stormy waters of the Arctic Ocean under a constant threat of

“Your heroism will always
be remembered in Russia and Britain. Your deeds will con

not by accident that our na tions found themselves on

More people are recognizing their importance, and there has been an associated peak of interest from the media. The Ministry of Justice has also launched a campaign called Planning for the Future which is aiming to raise public awareness, so expect this trend to continue.
Simply put, an LPA is a document which gives legal authority to a chosen person or persons, allowing them to make important decisions on an individual’s' behalf if they become incapable of doing so.
There are types of LPA, one relating to health and welfare and the other property and financial affairs.

As with Wills, another vital
document,
the importance of LPAs become obvious when you think about what happens if you don’t have one. Where there is no LPA in place, family members and loved ones have no authority to act on a relative’s behalf in the event of illness or incapacity
Failure to have an LPA in place should the worst happen, means a potentially distressing situation for family members and loved ones.
Illness and accidents can happen at any point, so it is important for people of all ages to think about the future now.
