A 27-year-old Clitheroe wom an sold her ex-boyfriend’s car after their relationship ended. Blackburn magistrates
. .
heard the vehicle ended up going for scrap, and the sale landed Corrine French in further trouble for mak ing a fraudulent insurance claim for a mobile phone she claimed was lost. Thecourtheardthephone
was used to advertise the car and was seized by police inves tigating that offence. French, of Black Lane Croft, Clitheroe, pleaded

sentation and theft of a car. She was given a conditional
discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay a total of £100
in costs. Miss Catherine Allan (pros
ecuting) said that French had been in a short relationship with Richard Avery and after they hadsplitup she purport
ed to be the owner of his'car and sold it. Mr Richard Prew (defend

fendant’s house and after they s n l i t h e k e r
split he kept saying he would come and move it. “Myclientwasannoyed,es

the car stereo using her phone and someone who came to buy it bought the car as well.” Police took her mobile
' phone as part of their investi gations, said Mr Prew, adding: “She was left without a phone and decided to claim on the insurance. She reported it as lost although it was in police custody at the time.”

Police haveissuedanewwarn- ing to the elderly after recent telephone frauds in East Lan cashire topped 30. The victims, who have
parted with a total of £80,000 to the conmen, have included people in Mellor and Clayton- ie-Dale. In each instance someone purporting to be a police of
ficer has contacted the victim, saying there has been some sort of crime relating to their bank or bank card. The victim is asked for
bank account details or to transfer a substantial amount of money to a “safe” account. In some cases a bogus po
lice officer has been to the house and taken money “for
fingerprinting." DC Barry James from
Burnley CID said: “If you have an elderly friend or relative, please let them know that this is happening so they can avoid becoming a potential victim.” Anybody with informa
tion can contact police on 101, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or
