role models of the future.* The not-for-profit vol

Campaign group in town to
back NHS Members of 38 Degrees took to the^treets of the Ribble Valley recently as part ofanational day ofac-
.tion in support of the NHS. The group met at \Vhal-
ley Library before collect ing signatures in Whalley andCUtheroe. Across the UK signa
tures were added to a na tional petition asking all potential candidates for
the forthcoming General Election to protect theNHS
against privatisation. . Meeting afterwards to discuss the impact of the day the group were moved
by the many stories which members of the public had shared about their contact
with the NHS and the wide ly held belief that it really is an essential lifesaving
service. Many concerns had
been expressed about po tential changes to an insur ance-based health service
as in the USA. All are welcome at the
next meeting of the local 38 Degrees group taking place on Tuesday March
17th at 6-45 P"1 >n t.h® Judge Walmslev Hotel at

A few months ago, the club house at Clitheroe cricket club left a lot to be desired and certainly didn't offerthe warmest of welcomes to players and members alike.
The committee decided it was time for a change and as the club was low on funds, they took on the challenge of rais ing the money needed them selves. A sponsored diet took
place over six weeks, with weekly weigh-in results post ed online which raised in the region of £2,500. A sponsored walk to all
the grounds in the Houlds- worth Solicitors Ribblesdale League was completed by Paul. Gaskell and Michael Houlds- worth, with other members of the club joining them for different legs, which took in more than 100 miles in five days; and raised in the region of£3,ooo. Generous donations of

time and materials meant the renovations started in the middle of January, project managed and overseen by Darren Stansfield, who gave all his time free of charge and was on site every day despite running his own business, DS Decorating Services.
Lots of help came from local
businesses, either in the form of cash donations or massive ly discounted prices for ma terials. Amanda Hall, club chair
man said: “The support we have had has been simply fantastic. There are too many

people to mention, but we would like to thank all the businesses who helped us, in whatever way. Gary Arthur from the Barber’s Shop on York Street even brought a curry down one night for eve ryone working to get things finished. And the Club’s spon
sor James’ Places gave us lots of lovely furniture which we are very grateful for. “The work done will bene
fit a massive amount of people in the community. It has been hard work but
the end result is great. We will also be giving some of the
money raised to our chosen charity Dreams and Wishes and donating cricket sets to local schools.” • Function bookings are
now being taken - for more details, contact club steward Mick Cox on 07845 999688 or 01200427961.
