dle our love for the written word. And at schools right across the country, it is also a chance for children to bring the pages of their favourite books to life, by dressing up as the characters from them. Thisyearwas no exception .

scoops top dog award

A talented 29-year-old photographer from Preston has secured the prestig ious title of the Kennel Club’s Dog Pho tographer of the Year with her portrait of a playful Ribble Valley pup. Cat Race entered the international

competition with her photograph of Tinkerbell the Great Dane puppy, which was taken in Brungerley Park. Cat said: “I wasn’t intending to take photographs of Tinkerbell that day, she

just happened to be in the location at the same time as I was finishing another shoot. She had just begun to playfully stalkmy Chihuahua, Poppy, andlseized the opportunity to snap the picture. “I have entered many of the catego

ries in the competition over the past two years as it combines my two key passions of dogs and photography. It’s also myjob as I set up my own business Cat’s Dog Photography after I realised I epjoyed dogshoots the most when in my old job taking family portraits.” Cat, who collected her award at

Crufts on Saturday, concluded: “It’s an honour to be recognised by such a repu table organisation as The Kennel Club and the prestige of receiving this award will just further my drive and motiva tion. I love to capture each dog’s individ ual character and personality and hope to continuously improve my work.”

A neglected lodge in Clithe roe has received a cash boost from a ground-breaking envi ronmental creditscheme.

Clitheroe’s man-made res ervoir, Primrose Lodge, was registered with The Envi ronment Bank in the North West’s first ‘biodiversity off setting’ scheme two years ago.

Biodiversity offsetting al

lows developers to purchase conservation credits from The Environment Bank, which are used to fund the creation and managementof conservation sites. The cash boost will kick-start a scheme to restore the neglected lodge to its former glory. Conservation c redits

measure a site’s biodiversity value based on factors such asthepresence ofhabitats for flora and fauna. Each credit is awarded a monetary val ue, which can be purchased by developers to pay for the creation and enhancement of “receptor sites”, such as Prim

rose Lodge. Ribble Valley Borough

Council’s countryside offic er, David Hewitt, said: “Biodi versity offsetting is a dynamic initiativeallowing the pooling of credits for the renovation- of bigger and more strategi cally placed sites, such as Primrose Lodge. Registering Primrose Lodge as a receptor site has raised funds to help create a local nature reserve that will be an important re source for local people. “We are delighted to have

taken part in this Environ ment Bank pilot scheme, which is the first in the North West." Primrose Lodge is a man

made reservoir built for manufacturing processing and the generation of power for factories at Clitheroe’s Primrose works. It is already a Lancashire biological herit age site and the council is con sulting with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust on how the site might be transformed into a nature reserve.
