Memorial Committee’s Christmas whist and domi: noes will be held on Thursday December 17th at 7-30 pm at the village hall.
Young Farmers Members met at the vil
lage hall to make Christmas decorations. Club chair man Callum Smalley and secretary Louise Simpson' demonstrated how to make a Christmas cracker and prizes were awarded for the winning design. Results: 1, Louise Simpson;
2, Lucy Armer; 3,Katie Dakin. Any spare decorations will be used at the annual “Cracker” event to be held at Clitheroe Auction Market tomorrow. This popular event is once again sold out and promises to be a great start to the Christ mas celebrations.
CHATBURN
Festive treats Residents at The Manor
House, Chatburn, have a busy entertainments programme in the lead-up to Christmas. They were treated to
festive singing and dancing, provided by the Blue Bird Entertainment Company, and thoroughly enjoyed the festive sing along. Children came from
Chatburn Play group visited and sang Christmas songs to delight the residents.

Festive party Chipping WI met for the
Christmas party. Members and guests were welcomed by president Barbara Debney and a Jacob’s Join supper was followed by entertainment from Naomi Holland. Doreen Kendall thanked Naomi for a lovely seasonal performance. Kate Derry was congratu
lated on her forthcoming marriage and presented with a gift. Jean Amory received the Margaret Whittaker trophy formost points in the monthly competitiofrs.'Secret Santa " gave everyone a Christmas present. The next meeting is on January 6th at 7-30 pm in Chipping Village Hall when Barbara Debney is speaking on her trip to India. The competi tion is for an Indian souvenir.

Festivities Preparation for the Christ-.
mas celebrations at the village church are well in progress. On Sunday, December20th, the children of the fellowship will be presenting the tradi tional account of the Nativity and at the evening service there will be the now tradi tional candlelit carol service. At both events the Community Choir will also be performing. On the morning of Christ- mas Day there will be a short service in church to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Everyone is most welcome to come along ■ and join in the celebrations.

Festive event There was an excellent
attendance at the Christmas event at All Saints’ Church,
Pendleton. The mellow tones of Arthur Geldard provided a
wonderful festive atmosphere in the village hall as he sang favourites old and new. There
was a tombola, raffle and mince pies and shortbread were served with tea or coffee. Proceeds are for the church.

Mothers'Union St John’s Mothers’Union
. held their Christmas fair/
coffee morning on Saturday in Read school hall and raised more than £1,000. Father Christmas was in attendance for the young children. The winner of the prize draw was Mr Venn, Alan Nesbitt won the bonus ball and Jack Green- ' wood the Christmas hamper. There was a good selection of stalls, toys, cakes, jewellery, novelties etc. and coffee and mince pies were served.
Christmas tree Read held its first Christ
mas tree festival on Church Street garden. The tree was over 30 feet high festooned with lights. There was an excellent turn-out of village residents, especially families with young children, babies and toddlers all very ex cited to see and meet Father Christmas. He arrived in his beautifully decorated sleigh and accompanied by many helpers who were all members of Padiham Round Table. The school choir sang Christmas songs and well-known carols after the festival had been officially opened by the vicar, the Rev. Robert Fielding. On arrival Father Christmas shook hands with every mem- berofthechoirand wished • them a happy Christmas. Most parents took younger children to sit in the sleigh with Father Christmas while they took photographs to record the occasion. Coffee, tea and mince pies
were served on Church Street by Some of the residents. A very successful and happy evening was enjoyed by every one there. Arranged by Read Parish Council this is certain to become an annual village
event.

Carol evening The annual Rimington and
Middop carol evening takes place in Rimington Memorial Institute on Sunday at 6-30 pm. Everyone is invited to this warm and happy Christmas celebration. Afterwards, tea and mince pies will be served. Proceeds are for charity.

Christmas Fair St Mary’s RC Church
Christmas Fair on Saturday has to date raised more than £1,300 for church funds. De spite dreadful weather people wentalongandinthegrand draw the Segway two-wheeled floating scooter was won by Mrs Pat Whitwell. Other prizes included a Christmas hamper, spirits, wine and chocolates. Stalls sold Christ mas wreaths, plants,toys and gifts, there was a tombola and bonus ball games, while the ladies served refreshments.
Pupils play rock music with the stones
Pupils atBolton-by-Bowland CE Primary Schoolhavebeenworkinghardtowards ' achieving the Arts Award “Discover” which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They have been working with MrsBobbie Miller from the Quarry Tales Project run by the Quarry Arts Project. The children have visited Hanson's Quarry in Clitheroe and have been learning about different rock
formations. They have also worked with art ist Ali Telfer drawing and painting, visited the Castle Museum where they played the . lithophone and are now creating music by striking rocks. The children are also learn ing dance moves replicating the actions of the old quarry miners, digging and breaking stones. The picture shows some of the musi cians composing tunes for others to dance to.

Christmas Lights The weather stayed fine
and a large crowd turned out for Sabden’s switch on of the Christmas tree and crib lights on Sunday evening. The Holme Committee Trust organised the festive service
and traffic came to a standstill as the Rev. Jonathan Carmyl- lie from St Nicholas’s Church gave the countdown to the switch-on at his first Christ mas in the village. The carols were led by “Zimmer and Xanthe” - James Basnett and Xanthe Gill, to get everyone into the Christmas spirit be fore Father Christmas arrived to the sound of “Jingle Bells” with bars of chocolate for all the children who queued up to greet him.
