m m ® \ l r Residents rally round to help ease plight of people left homeless in Cumbria

Torrential rain and gale force winds left parts of the Ribble Valley flooded over the week end.

Worst hit was Sawley where motorists had to negotiate wa terlogged roads. But the area appears to have missed the worst of Storm Desmond. There were no reports

of serious incidents or acci dents according to Clitheroe Fire Station Watch Manager Dave McGrath. He said crews had been

called to help out at Lancas ter and in Cumbria which was worst hit by the floods and where the area had been declared a mqjor incident. He said: “If there had

been any major incidents or risk to life in the Ribble Val ley we would have attended, but we were called on to help our colleagues in Cumbria. It was quite upsetting to see the devastation the floods have brought to so manypeople with possessions destroyed.” The Ribble Valley has also

responded fantastically to a Facebook appeal to help flood victims in Cumbria. Around 2,000 Valley residents have re sponded to the appeal to do

nate items, being co-ordinated byKateiBlezard. She said: “I have been up

all night responding to emails and arranging collection points because the response from people in the Ribble Val ley who want to help has been fantastic.”’ A full list of items needed

can be found be found on the Facebook page Help the Peo ple Affected By Floods in Cum bria and collection points are Automotion in Highfield Road, Clitheroe, Northcote Stud in Langho and The Frame Shop in Whalley. An appeal has also gone out for any local business- esorchurchestoprovidesome- where to store the items before

they are taken to Carlisle. A spokesman for the North

West Ambulance Service said crews had been operating un der extremely challenging cir cumstances withsevere floods in Cumbria and Lancashire preventing access to many parts of the counties. He said: “Despite there be

ing no casualties reported as a direct result of the floods, the Trust declared a mqjor in cident. “We are working closely

withourcolleaguesintheNHS, Cumbria Police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and other agencies to assist local commu nities asbest we can. “We would ask the public'

to only call 999 in cases oflife- threateningorpotentially life- threatening emergencies as it is important that we keep am bulances free for those in ur gent need.” The Bishop of Burnley, the

Rt Rev. Philip North has sent a message of support to the flood victims to let them know the thoughts and prayers of the people of Lancashire are with them. He said: “We can only admire the emergency services for their work dur ing this major incident and also the numerous volunteers, many from the faith commu nities, who are doing what they can to alleviate the situ ation.”

Staff at closure-threatened Calderstones Hospital are calling on supporters to join themon Saturday forarally and march through Whalley.

They face an uncertain future when Calderstones NHS Trust is taken over by Mersey Care NHS Trust in July, leading to complete closure of Calder stones in three years as rec ommended by Sir Stephen Bubb in his report on mental healthcare. The marchers are gather

ing at Whalley Arms car park at 12-30 pm to hear speakers from the main union Uni son, Blackburn Trades Union Council and Lancashire TUC, and possibly some parents of Calderstones service users. After the rally, they will

march through Whalley to the entrance to Calderstones, the

only remaining NHS hospital specialising in adults with learning disabilities.. Unison branch secretary Chris Chamley said: “We are

. saying ‘Don’t dump our serv ice users’ because we’re afraid they’ll be put out into the com munity with inadequate care, and the contract for their care

will go to the lowest bidder. “Some of our clients will

be transferred to the care of Lancashire County Council, but they’re already struggling badly with cuts, and the fund ing they’re being given is only enough for three hours a day

rather then the 24/7 care they get now. “We have two new build

ings at Calderstones, built with the last seven years, that cost £17.9 million, and clos ing them will just be a waste of public money. “We hope to raise aware

ness of what the closure will mean. This is just the begin ning of the campaign.” More than 1,200 people are

employed by the Calderstones NHSTrust, mostly at Whalley and some out in the commu nity or at other sites at Lan caster, Rochdale and Gisburn.
