On that occasion the Magpies eased to victory at the Macron Stadium, home to Champion ship side Bolton Wanderers, as skipper Andrew Teague, James Dean and Chris Almond netted to help the club claim the silverware for an unprec edented 16th time. However, it was a differ

ent story this time around as Matt Jansen’s men were made

to graft for their place in the semi-final of the competition at Victory Park. Striker Sefton Gonzales

Ayrton lands podium finish at mega event”

Chatburn’s teenage quad racer Ayrton Knowles en

joyed the highlight of 2015 when registering a podium finish in the PDV Youth Race in France. The 15-year-old entered the race alongside the remainder of the top 10 European 2 5 0 CC youth riders and finished in third place. Qualifying proved a com

petitive affair with just two seconds separating the 10 quickest racers with Ayrton finishing in the middle of that pack. The speed demon climbed in to third spot during the first

out and high side which saw him drop in to 17th. However, a strong finish

helped Ayrton claw his way back to eighth position. The combination of dust

C l ith e ro e R oyal G ram m a r School pupil Harvey Griffin has been crowned champion atthe BritishBiathlonChampionships held a t Tudor Grange S p o r ts Centre in Solihull, Birmingham.

The championships are the largest event on the Pentath lon GB calendar, attracting more than 800 athletes who compete in a swim and run. The final positions are de

cided on the total number of points achieved after both dis ciplines. ■ The 14-year-old, a year

nine student in the Ribble Val ley, recorded a personal best time of 2.06.76 in the 200m freestyle event which helped him in to second place.

He then ran an outstand

ing 1600m race in awful weather conditions, sprint ing to the finish line in first place, in a time of 5.00.10 to strike gold. Elliot Norman, 14, a year

10 pupil at Ribblesdale High School, competed alongside Harvey in the same event to win the 200m freestyle race inatime of2.05.40. The teenager was then

placed 17th in in the run to bring him home in fifth place at the end of the event. Harvey and Elliot were

delighted to be placed in the top six in the country repre senting the Ribble Valley MPT team and will go on to compete at the British Schools Modern

BiathlonChampionships in March at Crystal Palace. Hannah Procter, a year 10 CRGS pupil, competed in the

• under 16s girl’s event and was . placed in 26th place. All three top athletes com

pete and train regularly with one another at Burnley Bob cats swim squad alongside younger Bobcats. Maxwell Hereward, who

competed in the under 11s category, was placed 13th and Jamie Clayton in the under 12s category reached 22nd place. Harvey and Hannah also

final race day and the relent less rainfall created horren dous racing conditions. Ayrton took the lead on lap

two but hit a large track bar rier to plummet in to 12th. But a disastrous competition across the field saw Ayrton accumulate enough points to culminate the event on the podium. “This was definitely a high

point in my 2015 calendar,” beamed Ayrton. “It’s a mega event. “On the final day the heav ens opened turning a hard

packed clay track in to the most horrendous conditions thatl have ever had to race in. “I concentrated hard and

a disaster for most of the top riders and I still got enough points to take third on the fi nal podium.”
