33 NEWS IN BRIEF Dryathlon challenge «

Men and women across the Ribble Valley are being urged tobecomea dry athlete in Jan uary to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The charity hopes to sign

people up to the Dryathlon campaign in the New Year. The fundraising campaign

invites those taking part to take a month long break from drinking alcohol, and then donate the money they have saved to Cancer Research, or get sponsored by friends and family. Alison Barbuti, Cancer Re

search UK spokesperson for Lancashire, said: “We’re urg ing men and women to sign up now and help make January

2016 our best month yet. “Despite what people

might think going dry doesn’t have to be dull. We’re asking people to give up alcohol, not * ’ their social life, and there are _ plenty of fun ways to enjoy 31 ™ hangover free days, while rais ing money to help beat cancer sooner. “Every pound raised by our

Dryathlete heroes will help fund the charity’s life-saving research.”

Those who want to take

part can do so as individuals or set up a team and motivate each other along the way. Anyone interested can sign -*/i

up to the challenge by visiting www.dryathlon.org.

New members welcome Young archers on target for their sharpshooting shirts

Lancashire Junior Archers are wearing snazzy new hoodies after raising money with sponsored shoots. Lancashire and England archer Wendy Aubrey, of The Bowmen of Pendle and Samlesbury, organised a regional shoot at her own club, and other clubs held supporting shoots. “We needed to raise about £700 butweactually raised£i,623.50,“saidWendy, from Walton-

le-Dale. “We are delighted with ouryoung archers. They’ve made a brilliant effort and raised much more money than we were ex pecting them to.”In the picture are: Jonathan Wadsworth, Will Aubrey, Sarah Houghton, Rachel Hindle, Samantha Roberts, Kieran Shirley, Tom Rice, Martha Blinkhorn, Lewis Imeson, Michael Rice, Charlotte Hempsall, and Amy Titterington.

Clitheroe Chess Club A team were comprehensive ly thrashed by Rossendale B team in their latest Division Two fixture. Clitheroe players Phil Tit

terington, David Buckell and David Scorer all lost. Keith Melling drew his

game on board four and Ray Sutcliffe lost on board five leaving Rossendale winners

by 4.5 boards to 0.5. The team are rebuilding

after several players left due to health, work and even emi gration. New members are most

welcome to club evenings * at the Swan and Royal Ho tel in Clitheroe on Tuesdays from 7-30 pm or call Eric o n . 01200423364 for more infor mation.
