Car-crazy Justin Birchall is back in South America for the Dakar Rally nearlyayear after he was seriously hurt there in a crash.

Father-of-three Justin, 41, of Middop, Gisburn, is once again with Britain’s Race2 Recovery team of injured serv icemen, but this time he is part of the management team. Last year when he was

one of the drivers, his special Land-Rover .Wildcat broke down and he had to follow the rally with team members in a Land-Rover Discovery sup port vehicle. , On a desert road in Peru

the vehicle was in a collision with a local taxi, and two local people were killed. Justin suffered four broken

ribs and internal bleeding as the Discovery rolled over, but he left hospital in time to see the 5,000-mile rally finish in Santiago, Chile. All the while his wife Lou

ise and their daughters Ali cia, Courtney and Sigourney were anxiously following his exploits. “I couldn’t wait to help the

team take on this ultimate challenge,” said Justin, head of Hapton-based Birchall Food service and an experienced rally driver in his own right. “We learned a lot last year, and this time around we have set our sights even higher. “Not only do we hope to finish the race again, we also aim to provide some real competi tion to the teams without dis abilities”.

The rally started last week

end in Argentina and is travel ling through Bolivia and Chile, finishing on January 18th. Justin’s job with the race

management team is to help the Race2Recovery team’s four pairings, in two vehicles, to succeed in the gruelling event.,: Race2Recovery are the

only disabled rally team in the world and made history a year ago as not only the first disabled team to enter and complete the Dakar. The team is once again

raising money for the Help for Heroes charity’s support and recovery centre Tedworth House, Wiltshire. • For more information on

how to support the effort, visit www.race2rec0very.com .

If your child is due to start at primary school this summer, don’t forget that the deadline to apply for a place is next Wednesday, January 15 th. ^ The quickest and easiest way to apply is online, via

all children starting school, even i f the child already has an older brother or sister at their preferred school. Paul Bainbridge, Lanca shire County Council’s head

'of school admissions, said: “If a family already hasachildata school, it’s easy to overlook the obvious - that they must ap ply for a place for their young er child. ■ . “And i f they have twins,

they’ll need to fill in two ap plication forms.

“We know how important

it is to parents to get the right school for their child, so we’re encouraging them to apply on time to give themselves the best chance.” > ... Formore information, goto
