Bamboo is an environmentally friendly alternative to hardwood as the floor Is made from grass

rather than wood and so can be replaced more easily. It’s a naturally durable and tough material, which

undergoes further strengthening before it becomes a floor. • ■

: It’s also more moisture resistant. Bamboo can scratch and become bleached

under direct sunlight - so you need to maintain it p ro p er l y. . v

, Priced from approx £2 0 per sq m. Cork is another environmentally friendly product.

. No trees need to be cut down to produce cork. : It is naturally fire and mould resistant, has

; sound and thermal insulation qualities, is soft to touch and comfortable to stand on. It’s also easier to care for than hard wood. You need to use a sealant if you want cork flooring in your bathroom, otherwise it’s suitable for use anywhere. v:i;;Ypu’ll,be looking at.approx £22 persq m - upwards for cork.

YEARS ago 2 ” shagpile throughout a home was considered the height of sophistication.

.•U.Thankfuliy. iuVid patterns and decidedly dodgy colour schemes have been.replaced with a whole

range of modern floor coverings to suit every budget.

- If you can join the dots with stains on your

carpets, it’s time to take action and there are some great alternatives to carpet.

Wooden Floors

Real or hardwood floors are beautiful and lone lasting. • . Most popular woods used are oak and ash, but

you can get cherry, beech,- walnut and maple. Choose wood that comes from a FSC (Forest

Stewardship Council) source as this means that it comes from sustainable forests.

Solid Wood Flooring Is made of 100% wood. It comes at a price, but should last for

generations and suppliers will provide very long warranties and guarantees. It's not recommended for use in areas where there is a risk of moisture

such as basements or over under-floor heating systems. • Expect to pay upwards of £30 per sq m for solid

wood flooring.

Engineered Wood Rooring is made up of several wood layers, stuck together under high pressure. The surface veneer layer is available in many

different designs and finishes. It’s stronger and more durable than solid wood and can be used where solid wood wouldn’t be suitable. Engineered wood might cost anything from approx £25 per sq m.

Laminate has become extremely popular. It’s durable, hard wearing, easy to clean and

comes at a fraction of the cost of real hardwood floors.

It’s an image of wood placed onto a High Density

Rbreboard (HDF) and coated with tough melamine. It is less liable to scratches than real wood. Installation is easy - the planks just click

. together. It’s ideal for use in all rooms of the home. You

can buy laminate flooring for as little as £6 per sq m.

■ •••, ■

Vinyl has come a long way since it appeared as kitchen lino in most homes in the 1970s. It can be manufactured to replicate many

different materials including stone, tiles and wood and can have interesting patterns and designs. ■ Vinyl is waterproof, easy to clean and tough and

so is most suited to kitchens and bathrooms. Prices range from approx £6 per sq m upwards.

Tiles are available in an endless variety of shapes, sizes, colours and finishes.

Extremely durable and easy to maintain, they are

ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. If you think they’re cold on your tootsies then

consider having under flooring heating beneath. Carpet has been the traditional choice for flooring

. in the UK. You can get 100% wool, wool mix, natural or

man-made fibres in varying thicknesses and a multitude of colours.

Carpet underlay improves sound insulation,

helps to keep your home warm and is recommended to maintain springiness. Carpet tiles are also a good choice since they

can be taken up individually to be cleaned or replaced.

Rugs can add warmth and comfort to a room. As well as making a statement, they can define

a living space. Rugs are a cheap way to change the decor of a

room without going to the expense of replacing the whole floor.

They’re also a good way to protect flooring in high traffic areas or if you have kids.

Natural Fibre flooring such as sisal, sea grass and jute don't attract dust and can be woven into many different designs.

Colours are usually limited, although sisal can

be dyed. They are very hard wearing and lend themselves

well to stairwells and aigs. Prices generally from approx £1 8 per sq m.

. Rubber Is another renewable source of flooring. It is very hard-wearing, soft to touch, non-slip,

waterproof, resistant to fading and offers great impact absorbency.

It’s available in a wide range of colours too. Typical prices are from approx £4 0 per sq m.

Stripped bare It’s worth lifting the carpet and taking a peek at

the floorboards - particularly if you live in an older house.

Many homes have great natural wood

floorboards hidden away which can be stripped and varnished.

Hire a belt Sander and don a face mask and

goggles for a weekend and, voila, a beautiful wooden floor.

Even if the boards aren’t in great shape you ’ could try painting them.- .

Healthy floors If you’ve got an allergy sufferer in your house or

are one of the 5.1 million people that have asthma ■- then the choice of flooring you have in your home ■could seriously affect your health. ,

• Wall to wall carpets harbourtoxins and dust • mites and are treated with chemicals and generally considered the worst choice.
