REVIEW: "84 Charing Cross Road", performed by Stage Two Downham.
THE play, "84, Charing Cross Road", based on the book by Helene Hanff about the correspondence between her and Frank Doel, of Marks & Co., between the years 1949 and the late 1960s, was presented this week by Stage Two at Downham village hall.

■ - We were there on the evening of their last ■ ' performance and if this was of the same standard as seen throughout the week, then everyone who attehded must have had a very enjoyable evening. The difficult task of directing this touching story, told through the letters of Helene Hanff and Frank Doel, as they get to know one another and become dear friends, was in the hands of Fran Osborne, who must be
congratulated on bringing out all the emotion and gentle humour contained in this play. The setting, in two different locations on one small stage, was achieved admirably with a detailed and convincing bookstore on one side and a wonderfully, untidy apartment on the other. Gerry Purchase and all who assisted him in creating this deserve to be very pleased. As for the actors in this production, what
can be said, other than congratulations? As Helene Hariff and Frank Doel, Suesi Windle and Paul McGowan brought the two characters to life again with all the fun and sensitivity needed to make them real. Their roles were huge and so sympathetically played.
’ No member of this cast, which included
Stage Two regulars Andrea Cawley, Liz Wrigley, Eddie Bootle; Kim Croydon, Rachel Scott, and the two newcomers, Megan Hirst and Isaac Tranmer, should be left out of the praise, as eveiyone on that stage gave a delightful performance. Every production needs the technical
side, such as sound effects and lighting, to make it work and it certainly did. Well done everyone.

A MOUTH-WATERING array of delicious looking cakes greets visitors to the newly
'refurbished cafe near Clitheroe Market. . Blueberries is the name and new
proprietors are Katherine Pritchard and - - Julie Coy (pictured above), friends for many years who are both passionate about cooking. They have just bought the lease to the building, the former Jimmy Clitheroe's, and spent many hours making it as shiny as a new pin with tender loving care and a fresh coat of paint to highlight the blueberry theme. There are new tables and chairs and an impressive counter to
display their wonderful cakes and pastries. Katherine and Julie have worked..
together for many years and both always, yearned to have their own catering . business. They ran the cafe at Hanson's. . Garden Centre before taking over the cafe at
Read.Garden Centre, where their fame for good wholesome food soon spread. When the owner decided to sell the garden centre, fate took a hand and they suddenly became proprietors of the long established market cafe. It was quite a challenge, but so far they have enjoyed every minute and former regulars have ■■ soon discovered where they are and made a beeline for the home-made pies and delicious chicken broth with dumplings,,.: which are firm favourites. :. : y Katherine trained as a chef and while at
catering college spent her work experience in the kitchens of the most famous house in the country-Buckingham Palace. She also went to Windsor Castle to help with the celebration food for HM The Queen s

disastrous fire destroyed the old one. . . Katherine also worked at Brown's Bistro ■
for more than two years, where she joined Dave Brown in the kitchen learning her trade at this busy restaurant. Now Dave is ,, one of her regular customers. - . ■ , Julie, has trained on the job and her first
task each morning is making the delicious,, pies before turning her hand to the cakes and pastries. : Both are busy mums too, with Katherine
having three children and Julie two,- . • but with the help and support of their. husbands in the background they have , -, settled in remarkably well. They are well situated near the market to-
buy all their fresh vegetables from which to make their delicious soups and other - produce is sourced as locally as possible. The menu ranges from breakfasts to
sandwiches,-toasties, paninis, jacket potatoes and a children's menu. While the specials boards feature a huge range of ■ tempting dishes, lasagne, plate meat pie, steak and Black Sheep ale pie, salmon and dill fish bake among many other options, served with hand-cut chips or salad and vegetables.

• They also provide an outside catering service too.
■ ■ The Christmas menu is exceptionally
good value and if you pop in for morning coffee, lunch or tea and cakes in the afternoon you will be sure of a warm welcome from the lovely staff.
grapes grown in Gisborne, • Hawkes Bay, Marlborough • and Auckland all selected for
■
their optimum ripeness given sufficient sunshine to ripen the bunches. Each vineyard was .
. harvested and made separately before being blended and bottled.
- Modern wine making
' techniques are used, which includes cool fermentation in . stainless steel to enhance the . aromatics. Cold soaking of the grapes in their juice of "must"
v: to extract as much flavour as • possible from the skins.
- This wine shows perfumed rose petal, lychees, quince and a hint of spice, making . it an ideal partner for spicy South East Asian dishes. My
- favourites with this wine include crispy duck pancakes with hoi sin sauce or a traditional roast pork with crackling,
' stuffing and apple sauce, it has enough richness to cu t through the fatty loin of pork favour. It is widely available at £9.99 or with some discounting down to £ 7.99. To partner this try the Beaune 1 er Cru from Louis Jadot 2008, again widely available at about £16.50. This is an opposite of the white wine above as the fermentation here is carried but in open tanks and usually lasts 25 to 30 days at a higher. temperature. This helps to I extract colour, tanniris (not too much) and aromas from the Pinot Noir grapes.; ,; The wine is then aged in
oak barrels for at least 18 months. Making the wine ' a full bodied, but elegant _ wine showing ripe, red fruit
aromas, a hint of vegetable- aroma showjng signs of age, which is very pleasant on a ; ‘ ; red burgundy.
. To partner this
try.it with
some game - roast pheasant or partridge with game chips and redcurrant sauce and . ' as in Burgundy some soft - cheeses. - ’ .. ■ •'
