Mrs Pilkington said: “It was quite'a while before we started going out togeth-
; er, but eventually we got together.” The couple married at Clitheroe Parish
Church 40 years ago. They had found a house in Whittam Road, Whalley, where they still live. When they moved to the village, Mr Pilkington was invited to take over the captaincy of the Whalley ringing team and is still in charge. He said: “There have been a lot of dif
ferent faces in the team over the years, and when you get older it gets harder to
• keep on ringing. We have had times when we have had to take some time off. We are always looking for new people to join us.” - Mrs Pilkington, who was brought up in

works on Airbus fuel systems, lives in Bris tol and is married to Rachelj and Fiona, who lives in London and works as a nurse for International SOS.

Sawley Road, Chatburn, sells veg etables and bedding plants to raise funds for the Jennifer Trust for Spi nal Muscular Atrophy in memory of his late granddaughter Sophie. She lost her battle with the devastating
genetic disease six years ago when she.was just 12 months old. Ever since, Ernie and his wife Joan have devoted their time to raising funds to help find a cure for the disease. '
' When the vandals set fire to his allotment, last month, Ernie lost thousands of pounds worth of equipment.
■ But since the incident he has been inundated with offers of help and Ernie was overwhelmed by Martin and Debbie’s generous donation. ■
