CLITHEROE Ramblers spent a weekend in Melrose in the Scottish Borders, giv ing the opportunity for new walks, led by James Jolly, and a social get-together. Tlie first day’s walk covered
a section of the Southern Up land Way, a 212-mile coast-to- coast route from Portpatrick in the west to Cockburnspalh in the east. The group
caught.the bus
to Lauder and walked back to Melrose, an 11-mile route with wonderful views, and the magnificent Eildbn Hills could be seen from miles around, showing end of the walk clearly from about half way. ■ The route ended with a
short walk along the river . Tweed, crossing the chain footbridge back into Melrose. The second day was a cir cular walk, following the start
o f St Cuthbert’s Way. This is a 62.5-mile long walk end ing at Lindisfarne. The route traversed upwards towards the “saddle’! between the two main Eildon hills, and then they climbed the higliest (422 metres) and steepest peak first.
: : There was a view indicator
on the top, with wonderful 360 degree views, and after a : short break to appreciate this, the group then headed behind for the smallest peak (371 me- , tres), before coming back to
■ the “saddle” to climb the final hill (404 metres, but a gentle climb). Views of Melrose and . the surrounding area wCre quite spectacular. The descent took a circular ■
route along a forest track, and the final leg back into Mel- ’ rose passed the Leaderfoot Viaduct, and the information., boards showing the discov- '
cries made during the early 1990s excavation of the Ro man site of Trimontiiim (the Place of Three Hills) by Brad ford University. The entire walkwas 12 miles. The final day’s walk began
with a bus journey to Selkirk, following a section of the Bor ders’ Abbeys Way, a circular 64;5-mile walk covering the four ruined Borders abbeys ofKelsoe, Jedburgh, Melrose ■ and Dryburgli. The nine-mile route once again, the Eildon Hills were visible from about halfway. The route passed by the
ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford House, be fore descending to the river Tweed to follow river paths back to Melrose. The weekend had been'ex- '•
tremely successful, and very much enjoyed by the group of 22 ramblers.

TV helped Cathy to a miracle recovery
by Faiza Afzaal
A WHALLEY woman who suffered from bloating and di gestive problems for two dec ades has been cured - thanks to advice on a breakfast show. Cathy Pickles (41), of Pendle
Drive, had suffered from irritable bowel syndrome for the past 20 years and had a miraculous re covery following a revolutionary
food intolerance test shown on GMTV.
'.'She commented: “I thought it was all down to driving or be ing sat down all the time at work. Then I thought it might be down to milk or coffee and despite be ing diagnosed with IBS, none of the prescribed medicines really did anything. ■
with that, and the stomach cramps and tiredness, to the ex tent that my clothing would be come uncomfortable to wear, and become too tight. “If I was out I would have to
undo a button or at home I would have to change. “Then I saw a feature on GMTV about how it could be my : diet that was making me ill so I
did one of those food intolerance test and I’m glad I did it.” The results came back from a
laboratory in York and revealed the mum-of-hvo was intolerant to yeast, wheat, gluten, cow’s milk, and eggs.
Within her existing diet it CATHY PICKLES
“My main concern was the' bloating. It was difficult to live
meant cutting out the daily intake of bread, cheese, wine, cereals and the occasional bit of choco late.
“It was great to get the results,
but you wonder what you are go ing to eat. However, after I had spoken to a nutritionist I was able to accommodate the changes more easily.
. . “Within about four days of cut
ting out the food I began to feel better. “I was less bloated and didn’t
have any digestive problems. I have two young children and sometimes I have to eat sepa rately to them. My husband even calls me ‘Cava Girl’ because it’s the only drink I can have which doesn’t have any yeast in it. I went to a pub recently and ordered a cup of tea. “It’s not plain sailing, but 1 now
know what I can eat without feel ing the effects. I wish I had done this a lot earlier.”

You can’t use your hosepipe
UNITED Utilities, the water company which sup plies homes in the Ribble Valley, has announced a hosepipe ban to come into effect from 6 a.m. tomor row (Friday). The ban, which covers
most of the North West and is the first for 14 years, has been announced fol lowing the driest start to a year since United Utili ties’records began. John Sanders, United
Utilities’ water regulation and strategy manager, said: “Despite some re cent rainfall in the north of the region, reservoir levels are still significantly lower than we would ex
pect at this time of year and are now at a point where we need to impose some temporary restric tions on our customers. “It is not a decision we
have taken lightly, but a hosepipe can use as much water in an hour as a fam ily of four would use in one day.” The ban restricts the
use of hosepipes or sprin klers for private gardens and washing private cars. People can still water gar dens with a watering can and wash vehicles using a bucket and sponge. Ignoring the temporary
ban could result in a fine of up to £1,000.
Bogus workmen pair target elderly woman
POLICE are appealing for information after two men conned an elderly woman out o f hundreds of pounds. Around 1-25 p.m. on
Monday, two men claim ing to be from the Water Board conned their way into the home of an 85- year-old woman in Black burn Road, Ribchester. They told the woman
there was a water leak next door and they ur gently needed to enter her home to close the stop taps. They distracted the lady, before stealing sev eral hundred pounds from a wallet. , The men are described
as white, aged between 30 and 40. Both had round
faces and were wearing dark blue baseball caps with yellow edging. At least one of the men had red or ginger hair. Police are appealing
for anyone who may have seen the men in Ribches ter on Monday to come forward. They are also keen to speak to anyone who had a visit from them at their home. DS Nigel Watson at
Clitheroe CID said: “These men are callous thieves who deliberately preyed on an elderly and vulnerable lady.” Police are advising resi
dents to be extra vigilant and to check ID before allowing a caller into their home.
Trio of stores to open
THREE new stores are set to open their doors to the public tomorrow. A Londis convenience store within a new Texaco pet
rol station and a Subway shop are set to open at the former Primrose Garage site in Whalley Road, Clithe roe.
The development has created eight full and part-time jobs for local people.
