, CLITHEROE had their first glimpse of a Fleetwood second XV th a t has sat high in the- league since September. ■ ■ Kick-off came after a night
mare journey avoiding road works and a 15-minute hike to the pitch, which meant that Clitheroe started the match after a rushed warm-up, and after eight minutes Fleetwood crossed over for an opening try, which was unconverted. This seemed to wake up the
team, and they played good rugby which saw them press the Fleetwood line on several occasions, but 20 minutes of pressure was absorbed by Fleetwood, who continued to run from deep.

■ As half-time approached^' Clitheroe held their own, if not looking as dangerous and penetrative has they have done in previous weeks. Scrum-half Smith had his
usual intrusive, abrasive game, ably backed up by his half-back partner Watson, while the switched centre pairing of Railton and Peel took time to gel, but showed they had potential to break the gain line given space. Slack tackling cost the
visitors a converted try which took the score to 12-0.
By this time, blindside flank
Nuttall had left the pitch with an eye injury,1replaced by first team debutant Kyi Manson- KuUin, who slotted in at prop, while Edmondson moved into
• the second row and Curphey to his favoured^ blindside flank, from where his trade mark bullocking runs were seen to good affect. Clitheroe started brightly in
the second half, Edmondson continuing his excellent work and hooker Penny making no small contribution also. ■ After 10 minutes, slightly
against the run of play. Fleet- wood ran the. ball from deep
and dotted down under the
- posts to take the score to 19-0, again after slack tackling. With Manson-Kullin and
Proctor both propping very well - each from either end of the age scale - Clitheroe start ed to get the upper hand of the scrum as they were driven on by the powerhouse second row Dowson, and this helped the team more on to the front foot at the set piece. One foray into the Fleet-
wood half led to a Clitheroe penalty, and as it was directly in front of the posts, the easy three points were opted for. , Despite looking to most
observers like the kick was good, the flags stayed down and Clitheroe felt slightly hard done by. Positives to take from the
game were the return after long term injury of darting full-back Basquill, who with his wing men Ben Rigby and O’Connor looked exciting in attack, and the excellent debut of Manson-Kullih in the front row. On Saturday the Maroon
and Golds entertain Vale of Lune thirds at Littlemoor, who have been one of the form teams of late in the league, . kick-off 2-15 p.m.
f i- Spring is in the air THE 43rd edition of the

Walker from Great Harwood and the promoting club, who was 38th, and Russell Brass, who finished 41st. Local youngsters Sam
Boast, Hamish Graham and Martin Woofindin rode strongly throughout. Colne Olympian Steven

Grindleton.......... .. .6 Waddington.............. 4 HAT-TRICKS either side of half-time got Grindleton back to winning ways at the weekend.
• The visitors started strongly, and an Ibo
shot from the edge of the area stung the palms of captain Mashiter as it was turned onto the bar and cleared to safety. Minutes later, Sam Dean was through
but wasted a good opportunity when play ers were waiting in the box. Just when Grindleton thought they had
settled into the game, an innocuous-looking free-kick drifted into the box and was missed by the defenders before bouncing into the far comer. ■

Rimington ...................2 Langho ........................... i THEY say to become league champions you need to win games even when you’re not performing to your potential. And, if this game was anything
to go by, the East Lancs Division One title will be heading back to Rimington after they beat second placed Langho in less than impressive fashion. The away side dominated the
opening 45 minutes and utilised the pace and trickery of winger Gibson to good effect as they pushed the home defence back towards their own goal. Bolton threw himself in front of the first goalbound strike before Kershaw pulled off a stunning save low to his right. Simpson fired over from an acute angle shortly after. But i t was far more than
Rimington deserved when they took the lead'after 20 minutes when a long kick downfield from Kershaw was flicked on by Lloyd and into the path of Heslop who swivelled neatly before lobbing the ball over the keeper. Curtis and Clark both made
vital blocks as Langho searched for the equaliser and Kershaw pulled off two more fine saves. However, the visitors finally got what they deserved as Gibson was sent clear in the area to slide under Kershaw to level. Rimington re-grouped at the
interval and started the second half brightly. Heslop, who saw an early effort loop over the bar, and McLean were replaced by Penman and Walsh as the home side looked to push on and grab all three points. And they were rewarded for
their efforts when they re-took the lead courtesy of a defensive lapse from Langho. A poor pass was intercepted
and Lloyd headed on to Penman inside the area from a Green pass before the veteran striker round ed the keeper to slot home. The visitors looked to respond
immediately and Rimington had . Kershaw to thank again as he did ' brilliantly to tip a shot onto the post and then'reacted quickly to ■
push a deflected shot off Curtis ' away from the top comer. Manager Terry Braithwaite
said: “The players are working hard and that’s probably why we are winning, however, we won’t get away with playing so poorly every week if we are to keep on track for three trophies. Kershaw kept us in the game while Curtis and Clark were excellent at the back but I ’m mystified why our midfield is being dominated when: we have so many quality places vying for places in there. We- move on to Mill Hill away twice now and we’ll need to play better for sure.”
