’ - , Can the latest Astra ecoFLEX deliver the"

: goods against the other economy-focused . family hatchbacks?

. In creating the ecoFLEX model, Vauxhall ■ employed the smallest diesel engine at its dis posal, but the thought of a 94 b.h.p .1.3-litre ■ CDTi diesel povvering a vehicle of the Astra's > bulk does give ^me cause for concern.; ■ ■ As long as buyers are not hoping for tyre

smoking performance from their eco-friend ly Astra; there should not be too many prob- -lems.

: Even with the 13.7 seconds 0-60 m.p.h > .sprint positioning the car at the slower end of the family hatch market, it should feel strong enough in daily driving thanks to 200Nm of torque between 1,850 and 4,900rpm.

In.the ecoFLEX models, the 1.3 CDTi

engine is mated to a five-speed manual gear box with ratios specially optimised to take some strain off the engine. There is a gear-change light that prompts

you to change up when appropriate and the engine management computer itself is also reprogrammed to make the most of what the Astra has in its tank.

i ^ ' - . . ' , T s,’ ' V , : ■ . .In’contrast with the green versions of ■

some family hatchbacks, the Astra ecoFLEX amounts to more than some engine tinkering and longer g^box ratios. . The car also features active aerodynamics

, in the form of a shutter behind the front' grille that can close to ease the car's passage. through the air at high speeds. There are also more conventional aerod3mamic changes to ' the underside of the vehicle. The crux of the Astra ecoFLEX was

always going to be the cold hard facts of its economy and emissions figures.-'With a 67.3 m.p.g. combined cycle showing and 109g/km emissions, it is right up with the most effi cient and cleanest family hatchbacks on the market. • Owners will reap the benefits in terms of lower fuel bills and a lighter taxation burden

which, in this day and age, should prove a big draw.

T might have a I ; hatchback and it A might ride: on the -

same platfonn as that iconic family hatch back the Volkswagen Golf, but the Skoda Octavia does not quite fit in the family hatch

back class. The issue is size, as even

might ask.

Vauxhall's latest supersized Astra falls short of the Octavia's grandiose meas urements. What is the problem, you - .

Well, in many respects

big is beautiful, but can a car of the Octavia's bulk really get away with a 1.2- litre engine? Skoda thinks it can

because it is offering one in the latest range. TSI tmbocharged direct

injection petrol engines are not units to be taken light ly, even with a 1.2-Iitre capacity in a vehicle of the Octavia's heavyweight

dimensions. Despite its size, the 1.2-litre TSI unit achieves 104 b.h.p. and an even more useful 175Nm of torque.

That torque is available

across a wide expanse of the rev-range from 1,550 r.p.m. all the way up to 4,100 r.p.m., creating simi lar flexibility to that which you'd expect to get from a diesel engine. Performance against the

clock is far from lacklustre too. The Octavia 1.2 TSI can achieve 60 m.p.h. from a standing start in 10.8 sec onds and will eventually hit a 119 m.p.h. top speed. The Octavia was always

renowned for possessing a huge boot, given its family hatchback underpinnings, and so it remains. You get 560 litres with

the scats in place and 1,350 litres with the seats folded

which is in the same ball park as medium range models like the Mondeo and Passat. Go tor the Octavia

Estate and the respective statistics are 580 and 1620 litres.

All these figures are mas

sive improvements on what you would get from the Golf and Focus-sized fami ly hatchbacks that this Skoda is priced against. Passenger room is simi

larly generous - and that is important since the prodi gious luggage space of the first generation Octavia

required rear seat passen gers to pay in kind. The long wheelbase of

this second generation model endows it with admirable rear leg room, even when the front seats are occupied by long limbed adidts. Hatchabck or estate, S or

SE trim: that is the scope of choice available to Octavia 1.2 TSI customers. Except to say that, while the standard car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, there is also the option of Skoda's clever seven-speed DSG dual

clutch transmission. This system has TniTiiTnai impact

on performance and econo my, but commands a £1,100 premium for doing away with the clutch pedal. The 1.2-litre TSI

Octavia should prove agreeably cost-effective to run for a car of its size with combined cycle fuel econo my edging towards the 50 m.p.g. barrier and emis sions of 134g/km. The DSG gearbox only

increases fuel consumption by a single mile per gallon or so and should prove a popular option.

If there is a lesson to be

learned from the Skoda Octavia 1.2 TSI, it is that in the modern car market we need not be as wary of the small engine, big car combination as we m'ay have been in the past. The impressive 1.2-litre

TSI unit punches far above its weight with strong per formance and economy that belie its modest capac ity.

At the prices Skoda is

asking for its large and roomy Octavia, this entry level model makes ail kinds of sense.
