TWO old and long-established institu tions, a church and a friendly circle, are about to close due, not to the credit crunch, but to lack of members and financial support. The end of September will be a very

sad time for the people who worship at Langho Methodist Church and for those who enjoyed the various activities in the church and schoolroom. Langho Methodist Chapel was built

with money raised locally and has been a place of worship for over 95 years. Now the building is to be sold and the proceeds will go to the Blackburn Cir

cuit. The closure of the church will be very

hard for the older members who live within walking distance of the present building and for one reason or another do not wish to travel to either of the church es in Whalley or Wilpshire. Members wish to continue their wor ship in Langho and are looking for suit

able premises. One of the last services will be the har

vest festival service, to take place this Sunday, at 10-30 a.m., and the last cof fee morning in aid of Macmillan Nurses is the following Saturday, September 19th, from 10-30 a.m. to noon. The final service in the church will be

on Sunday, September 27th a t 10-30 a.m. when all will be welcome to join in

the farewell. I t is also with regret th a t a decision

has been made to end the monthly meet ings of “The Friendly Circle”, in Read. Formerly known as Read Friendly

Circle, it has been in existence for many years, but a recent fall in attendance has made the meetings no longer viable, due mainly to spiralling costs of guest speak ers. The average age of members is ever

increasing and new members are not being attracted to the society, which met in Read United Reformed Church for many years. The committee would like to apologise

to members who enjoyed attending The Friendly Circle, meeting up with friends old and new a t this social outlet which attracted people from Read, Simonstone and the surrounding area. Sincere thanks are extended to every

one who helped in any way with the run ning of the circle over the years.
