Tour is coming next week

BIG crowds are expected when the Tour of Britain cycle race passes through the Ribble Valley next Tuesday Top cyclists from the UK and abroad, including Bradley Wiggins, who exceed ed all expectation is this year’s Tour de France, will take part in the event. The Tour runs over eight days, from

September 12th to 19th, with the eight daily stages taking in much of the UK, from the Scottish Borders to Exmoor, and ending in London. Stage four starts and finishes at Black

pool, with the racers cycling a 148km cir cular route with some demanding climbs, including Waddington Fell. A system of rolling road closures will be operated by police throughout the race, so that the relevant section of road ivill be closed to all moving traffic while cyclists pass through. The stage begins in Blackpool at 10-15 a.m., with the cyclists expected at Cock-

erham by 11 and Claughton by 11-30. From there the route heads for Bentham and onto the tough Tatham Fells by around 11-45. Following the B6478 over Catlow Fell, the racers will head for Slaidbum and Newton, expected to reach Waddington Fell by aroimd 12-15 p.m., with large crowds expected as this is one of the toughests and most scenic parts of the stage, if not the whole tour. After the steep and fast descent into

Waddington, the route takes the twisting back road to Edisford Bridge, where it joins the B6243 through Great Mitton, Hurst Green, Knowle Green and on to Longridge. 'The racers are expected to reach Broughton shortly after 1 p.m. and the finish on Blackpool promenade at around 1-50 p.m. For the second year running there will

be full coverage of the race on TV, with viewers able to enjoy an hour-long night ly highlights show of all the action on

eight years in the planning, cel ebrated the Girl Guiding move ment, which began in 1909 when a small group of young women gatecrashed a Boy Scout rally in London and lob bied Robert Baden-Powell to provide “something for the

girls”.

WHILE most people were enjosring a relaxing time over the August bank holiday weekend, three members from Clitheroe Bike Club decided something more challenging was called for. Sarah Nock, Richard

Cowan and Dave Powell took part in a “coast to coast adventure race” from St Bees Head, Whitehaven, to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. There were 18 stages to the

four-day event, each of which had to be completed by two team members. Stages included kayaking the length of Buttermere, Crum- mock, Thirlmere and Ulswa- ter lakes, and often dragging the boats for up to two kilo metres between some lakes and over fences. Sarah par ticularly enjoyed the kayak ing, as she is also a member of Clitheroe Canoe Club. Other stages were dedicat

ed to running over moun tains such as Robinson, Helvellyn, Cat Bells and Nine Standards. There were also plenty of biking stages, which best suited Dave and Richard, with a mix of road riding and challenging off road riding. Navigation played a big

part in the event, with com petitors following routes to each transition point and often having to plan their own route. One stage saw Sarah and Richard swim ming 500 metres across Der went Water, immediately after a four-hour run over a mountain. There were a few incidents

along the way, with a twisted knee and then a brief fall

from the bike for Sarah plus sore muscles and blisters from the boys. The team was also hampered on many occasions by the traditional bank holiday weekend weather, with rain, hail, gales and thunderstorms aU on the first day! Even so, spirits were gen

erally high, even when hav ing to pack the tent away at 4 a.m. to prepare for the day’s events. Over the four days, they spent 34 hours and 35 minutes racing and finished a very creditable 11th out of 17 teams. Sarah, who was featured in

the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times last October after breaking her collarbone in a fall from her mountain bike, said: “I t was a gruelling four days - mentally and physi cally - but an amazing achievement. “We would like to say

thank you to Len Farnsworth and Mick Harri- son-Reader for supporting us on Friday and Saturday by transporting the two-seater sea kayak between some of the lakes and making sure our kit was ready for each stage.” Sarah, Dave and Richard
