Qldfriends’ club i n Reynolds and Sargeson set to face the Blues

CLITHEROE boss Peter Smith will be reunited with some old faces on Tuesday when the Blues travel to Bamber Bridge. Smith and assistant Kenny

, Mayers, who both had spells with Brig, are set to be wel comed at the QED Stadium by former Shawbridge favourites Neil Reynolds and Craig Sargeson on Tuesday when the sides meet in the UniBond First Division North. The Blues boss admits that

the four of them still remain good friends. “Reno and Sarge are two good friends of mine. There certainly hasn’t been any love lost, we have great respect for each other and it will always be that way. “I still speak to both of them

because we’ve known each other for a long time, and it’s good to see them doing well. They both wanted a change and you’ve got to respect that. They were great ambassadors for the club, but it would be great to go out there and get one over on them.’’ The Ribble Valley side

claimed a 5-0 victory in this fixture in February last season, with one of the goals coming from Sargeson, but Smith is adamant that his side face a tougher test this time round. He said: “It should be a

great game, and obviously there will be a few familiar

faces. There’s a few players that have links to both clubs, with Reynolds and Sargeson featuring for them this year, and myself and Kenny (May ers) who have played for Bam ber Bridge in the past, so there will be a lot to play for.

. “But we will treat it like any other game and we will go out

there to play to the best of our ability and win. It will without doubt be a tough game, but we won’t be going there just to sit back. Bamber Bridge spent some money over the summer and-have brought in some experienced players, so they will be hoping to finish up there this year. “But we’ve got to compete

against them like we’ve com peted against everyone else. At the end of the day, it’s just like any other game because we are playing for three points. We have got to go there and do a professional job.”

- The Blues picked up their second and third clean sheets of the season in quick succes sion with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Colwyn Bay in the league on Saturday, before goals from prolific new signing Jerrome Matthews and a penalty from Jason Jones sealed a 2-0 against Radcliffe Borough in the UniBond Presi dent’s Cup at Shawbridge on

encourage others to take up the event. The Wilpshire athlete was

Tuesday night. Smith said: “I

■ witnessed a great team per formance in both games. There wasn’t any individual that

‘stood out because they all played well together. “Everyone played their part

and it was a massive bonus to get two clean sheets. Everyone worked hard throughout the team and we defended well from the front to the back. “I said before that if we can

stop making silly mistakes, conceding sloppy goals and stay switched on, then we can win games, and that is some thing which the lads have done. They were really focused and are growing in confidence and knowledge with every game that they play. We were fantastic as a unit and we got the results that we deserved.” Clitheroe will play host to

high-flying UniBond Premier Division outfit Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday for a 3 p.m. kick-off in the FA Cup first qualif3dng round. Smith added: “It’s a massive

game for us but we feel that it’s a game that we have the ability to win. They are flying high but we have already proved that we can more than match

the big sides in the higher divi- ■ sions. We can’t be scared of

these teams and we will take the game to them, focus on playing to our strengths and give them a game.”

a lot of time and came in 22nd overall. Though happy to ‘' have competed, he was not

\ pieced at how far down he finished, so set about putting that right. After a full season of racing in 2004, he

^ went back to the Clitheroe event and came third. ^ The triathlon had something of a

hiatus after that, but when it was reorganised this year, he seized his chance to win, boasting the fastest bike and ' run splits. This year Wilkins has also

qualified for the 2010 Euro pean-Age Group Champi onships in Ireland, and has also raced for Great Britain in Hawaii and Portugal. With this experience in the sport, he is eager to help oth

ers who want to get involved, and has set up a club, Tri Clan, who compete in triathlons but also participate in duathlons, aquathons and individual swimming, cycling and running events. The club give out advice

and training tips to people, and are open to anyone who wants to get involved. For more details, go to www.triclan.co.uk
