Drive, pleaded guilty to damaging a VW Polo belonging to his ex-girl friend. He was made sub je c t of community sup ervision for 12 months, ordered to do 120 hours impaid work and pay £500 in compensation. Mrs Philippa White
(prosecuting) said th a t, according to the girl, the
relationship finished on friendly terms. She had some of his jumpers
which she had intended to return. Text messages about exchanging property deteriorated and he became more and more insistent about the return of his property. “One message said he would
cause damage to her car because he mistakenly thought she was withholding Ms property deliber ately,” said Mrs WMte. “She sent him a message back
saying how dare he threaten her and warning that if he came any where near her, her car, her family or her dog she would go to the police.” Then she came out of work one
lunchtime and found numerous panels on her car had been dented and a light fitting cracked. Mr Price said Shillitoe accepted
the relationship was over and he didn’t want any further contact.

RUNNING SPELL: A group of witches and one young wizard get ready for the big event (above)
EAGER FOR THE OFF: Four-year-old Chloe Jefferson-Aspden before the Race for Life (left).
FANCY dress was the running gear of choice for many taking p a r t in a
charity fim run. The Run For Life, in aid of Macmillan
Cancer Support and Cystic Fibrosis, was one part of a whole day of events at the Stork Hotel in Simonstone. Runners and walkers set off from the
Stork Hotel and cut a circuit down Whalley Road, into School Lane, along Whins Lane, into Straits Lane, then back onto Whalley Road to the finish line back at the hotel. All the entrants were rewarded with a
medal and a free hot pot lunch at the Stork Hotel after their efforts, which raised a sizeable pot for the two charities.
Warren Eastham, committee man and
child welfare officer of Read Cricket Club, organised the event with a team of local volunteers and Read and Simon- stone Parish Councils.
He said: “The response to the fun day
m regards to donations from busmesses and support from local clubs and author ities, was overwhelming.
“This was a big event for two really
worthy causes tha t aside from raising money, offered something fun for all to join in.”
Games, quizzes and pool and croquet
competitions continued throughout the day and there was entertainment during the evening including a charity auction.
s - 'T Life in a desert kingdom The audience was sur
prised to hear of the free dom permitted provided rules were followed in pub lic. In the cities women are
not allowed to drive and must conform to a dress code, but on and around the golf course in the desert motoring, T-shirts and shorts are de rigueur. The speaker demon
strated the clothing she usually wore outside the palace and handed round items of Bedouin jew ellery as well as a fossil shell of which th e re are many examples in the desert. Ms Salter said her
employer was generous and that staff were well provided for, but crime is
severely punished. She explained that the main city square in Riyadh is known colloquially as “Chop Chop Square” because th a t is where heads, hands and feet are separated from their own ers, demonstrating two sides to a country-at once beautiful and brutal. Following questions, a
vote of thanks was given by Alan Bowles. • The club meets on
the first and third Fridays of the month in the Pen- dle Club, Lowergate, at 10-45 a.m. Clitheroe. O At the next meeting
on October 16th Phil Scul ly will talk on “Grumpiest Old Men”. Enquiries to 01200 429207.
