THWAITES BREWERY’S shire horses in traditional har ness were the star attraction of an open day at Whalley Com Mills, which raised £850 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. Pulling a 19th Century dray,
visitors were treated to a demon stration by this award-winning team while head horsekeeper, Charlie Beardmore, gave an
informative commentary about the horses history, management and harness. The almost 400-strong crowd
attending this year’s event was also entertained by displays from the Pendle Dog Agility team, before browsing the rows of stalls
packed with locally-produced goods.
Many people also took along
their own dogs for a day out and to take part in the novelty dog show later in the afternoon. The open day at Whalley Com
Mills has become a popular fea ture amongst customers over the past five years. “It was a natural choice for us

“A number of our customers
speak very highly about the treatment and support they have received at the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, and this is a cause which many people can relate to.” A hog roast from Rowland Out
door Pork provided complimenta ry filled rolls for everyone while volunteers from the Rosemere Cancer Foundation supplied the refreshments. “I’d like to say a massive thank
you to everyone who worked real ly hard to prepare for the day and make it such a success. “We raised £850 for Rosemere
and I feel really proud of what we have all achieved,” added Jonathan.
MP asks PM to consider the wider ramifications of BAE fraud case
RIBBLE VALLEY MP Nigel Evans has written to the Prime Minister after the Serious Fraud Office said it would ask the Attorney General to prosecute BAE S3istems over allegations of bribery. Mr Evans said: “I have written to Gordon Brown,
Peter Mandelson and Bob Ainsworth asking them to consider all the relevant facts regarding the BAE allegations. “Clearly, the decision to prosecute lies with the
Attorney (ieneral, but Tony Blair set a precedent as Prime Minister by taking a personal and active interest in the last investigation in the national interest. “The latest charges levelled at BAE could have
huge ramifications for UK manufacturing and par ticularly manufacturing in the North West given the

prominence of the Samlesbury and Wharton sites. “Over the past 17 years I have worked very close ly with BAE and I know how skilled their manufac

^ “There are obviously concerns that BAE need to
allay but, at a time of economic distress, a crippling blow to the UK’s biggest manufacturer would be bad for all concerned.
■ _ , “BAE’s contribution to the UK’s Monomy should
not be underestimated. • “Clearly the SFO investigation has taken consid

premature actions against BAE and its viability for the future.”
