The big switch: Your questions answered

W ‘

1. Do I need to buy a new TV? No, you.don't need to get a new TV as almost any TV can be converted with a digital box, even black and white ones and televisions without scant sock ets. Your television needs to have either a scant or RF input. Unfortunately if your television does not have either of these inputs it cannot be converted to receive digital television. Most, but not all, digital boxes come with scant sockets so make sure you check if you tel evision has one. If your TV was made after 1995 it will have a scant socket. If your TV does not have a scant socket, you can purchase a digital box that connects to the RF input (aerial socket) on your television. Thomson, Humax, Linsarand Commtel are some of the man ufacturers that currently pro duce these. An electrical retail-' er will be able to advise further on your options, the key thing is to ensure that the box has an RF Modulator which means it will work without a Scant con nection. If you decide to get new equip ment make sure you look for the 'digital tick' logo - TV sets, digital boxes and digital TV recorders that carry the 'digital tick' are designed to continue working after switchover.

2. How much should a new roof aerial cost? Most aerials should work after digital switchover, but a few may require an upgrade or new cable connections if you decide to get Freeview. If you do need a new aerial, in stallation is likely to cost around E60-E180, and an addi tional socket costs around £45. If you need to upgrade your aerial, look for an installer be longing to the Registered Digi tal Installer Scheme (RDI), identified by the 'digital tick' logo. Registered Digital In stallers are security checked and aerial experts. To find one in your local area visit the RDI website at www.rdi-lb.tv or call Digital UK on 08456 50 50 50. If there isn't a Registered Digi tal Installer near you, then you can look in the Yellow Pages for an installer with CAI+ or IDSC trade association qualifica tions. Alternatively ask at your

local electrical retailer. If you are visited by an installer who isn't from the RDI scheme, we recommend you check to see that they are qualified.

3. How do I re-tune my set-top box? Switchover is a two-stage process. If you have, or are planning to get Freeview, BT Vi sion or Top Up TV, you will need to re-tune your digital box or TV:

■ At each of the two stages of switchover ■ If you find you have lost any TV channels

Re-tuning regularly is good practice. This ensures that you keep your equipment up to date, and that you have all of the latest channels. If you are not sure how to re-tune, follow the guide below. It is a good idea to practice re-tuning be- , fore switchover, so you know how to re-tune on the day. Satellite and cable television does not need to be re-tuned. These instructions are a guide only - each product works slightly differently. Your in

struction manual will explain the process for your particular product. If you don't have a copy of the user manual to hand please follow the follow ing generic guide. Make sure you do a full re-tune following the guide below. Some product menus have 'add channels' or 'auto search' functions which may not restore all channels.

■ Switch on your Freeview TV or box. Press 'menu' on your remote control.

■ From the 'menu' options on screen, select the 'set up' or 'in stallation' menu.

■ Select 'first time installation' option (sometimes called 'fac tory reset', 'full retune' or 'de fault settings'. Some digital boxes will ask you for a code. If you haven't already changed it this is usually either 0000 or 1234.

■ Press 'OK' if your equipment asks if you want to delete all your channels - don't worry, this is normal. Channels will be automatically installed. This may take a few minutes, and your equipment may shut down and restart.

Re^rder/^T-^ S T Hints and tips

■ After re-tuning, you may have to reset any favourite lists and picture settings. ■ If you re-tune a digital TV recorder, previously recorded programmes will be kept, but you should re-set future recordings (including 'series links') or you may lose them.

Need more help?

■ Friends or family may be able to assist

■ Contact the product manu facturer for instructions, or

■ See your local electrical re tailer.

4. Am I eligible for the Help Scheme?

You are eligible for the Switchover Help Scheme if:

■ You are aged 75 or over, or H You have lived in a care home for 6 months or more, or

■ You are registered blind or partially sighted, or

■ You get (or could get): - Disability living allowance, or - Attendance or constant at

tendance allowance, or - Mobility supplement

5. What kind of digital TV is available in my area?

If you use the postcode check er on Digital UK's website www.digitaluk.co.uk, it will indi cate which options for receiv ing digital TV are available in your area now, and after switchover. You can convert your existing TV with any of the services available or you can decide to get a TV with a digital box built-in. Digital UK's postcode checker will also de tail whether the service is avail able for a One-off payment or as a monthly subscription.
