WHEN' a work col league in the Library, asked Brett Cleeve if she would like to sing in a choir at Westminster Abbey Gardens in June,. 2007, little did she know what lay in store for her. That choir was part of

“Sing Live’’,,a concept which began 10 years ago with th e simple aim of bringing people together to enjoy singing as part of a big choir. What started as a plan for one choir now has nine regional “Sing Live communities” spread across England and North ern Ireland and coming together for spectacular performances.

; Now on the “Sing Live”,

mailing list, both Brett and. her husband. Bob, were tempted to join the choir again, this time singing in three performances of the Candlelight Processional at the Disney Epcot Centre, Florida, in November last year.

. ■ ■ I t was a memorable

occasion, the choir singing some beautiful Christmas music and working with a large orchestra and profes sional conductors. The three performances each lasted about an hour-and the choir sang to a paying audience of 2,000, plus more who could stand and watch for free. ; Members also attended a

“Disney Masterclass” run; by the Orlando vocal coach for Sing Live USA, where, the choir’s recording of an excerpt from the “Hunch

name. Next came a drive to

Miami and a cruise to the Caribbean, on which the

: choir performed a medley , of Broadway hits from the “Sound of Music”, “My.. Fair Lady”, “Chess” and many more. Although a wonderful

trip, it required some seri ous preparation, as Bob Cleeve explained: “Sing Live don’t allow you to sing from a score during per formances. We had to learn i t all by heart, so our chal lenge was to learn 33 songs from -Tl est nee’ - in French , - to ‘Copacabana’ and the ‘Rhythm of Life’ - all in. four, six or eight part har mony.” . ■ Immediately after the cruise ship performance. Sing Live founder John Morris broke the news that Sing Live had been granted permission to sing a t a- Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican. Bob and Brett decided

there and then th a t this was a once-in-a-lifetirae opportunity to experience something unique. When the details came out in Jan uary, they decided to take their daughter, Samantha Smith, with them, making a trio of second Soprano (B re t t) , alto (Sam) and bass (Bob).

. “Sing Live sent us the

. music and the CDs with ' our individual parts picked out and we went to three

beautiful ‘Ave Verum Cor pus’ by Mozart, and John Rutter’s ‘Claire Benedic

tion’.- Inspired by their conduc

tor Steve Roberts, the fam ily learnt the words and music. “Our biggest fear was

that we would be overcome by the emotion of the event,” confessed Bob. “This is glorious music, perfect for performing in a Cathedral, but they are also tear-jerking melodies that are technically com plex.” In the event, by the time

the choir of 300 from the UK and 30 from the USA were all settled in the con gregation area of the High Altar a t St Peter’s, .there was little time to reflect on the surroundings. “We knew th a t there

were going to be technical difficulties because it takes several seconds for the sound of the organ music to reach the choir, so we all

■had. to be completely focussed on the conductor.

Our organist only arrived on Saturday morning and had no o p p o r tu n ity the practice on .the.' organ r before going live.” Despite the difficulties

everything ran smoothly to produce an o u ts tan d in g performance. “Our concentration w a s ;

so great that there was no room for emotion - th a t came later. Of course, we could not hear what we sounded like, but a t the end of the Mass, when we had sung our last piece, we received applause from the crowds and we understand th a t such a reception is very rare anyway and pos sibly a first at the Vatican. We were also invited to . have group p h o to g rap h s . taken at the High Altar - a , rare privilege indeed.”.:. . The choir has already

been invited back'to sing, there next year on the 10 th' of the 10th, 20101 Before th a t there is the A lb e r t’ Hall, another trip to Flori-_ da and in April, a t S t Mark’s in Venice.”

Sing Live’s rehearsals in

the North West are held at Bolton under vocal coach Steve Roberts, who is also Sing Live’s Musical Direc tor. Seventy choristers from

the North West group sang in Rome. For more infor mation about Sing Live, visit; -www.singliveuk.com The Cleeve family are

well known locally in ama teur dramatics. Sam Smith had appeared in all of the last 10 Clitheroe musical shows and although Bob has done 10 shows over the past 30 years, he is better known for acting at Stage Two Downham. . Indeed, no sooner was he

.back from Rome than he was playing “Norman” in

; the group’s production of ■ “Round and Round the Garden” , the same part th a t he played a t Down- ham’s first ever production 20 years ago.

Plenty to crow about at festival

by Natalie Cox

WET weather in Waddington did not deter visitors to the Ribble Valley village on Bank Holiday Monday for the culmi nation of its annual Scarecrow

Festival. Fortunately the weather on the

pre'vious two days had been much brighter, if a little blustery, bring ing plenty of visitors to spot the scarecrows and enjoy the many other attractions. Despite Mon day’s very damp conditions, the crowds were drawn to Waddington for the annual duck race, which again saw thousands of plastic yel low ducks bobbing their way down

the brook at the heart of the vil lage. The race was an entertaining

finale to the weekend’s scarecrow festival, which this year had the theme “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. As visitors made their way

through the village, scarecrows were spotted in many gardens, with Bart Simpson, a blue nun. Jaws, Beauty and th e Beast and of course a couple of topical references to swine flu among the many home-made models on display. Winners of the first prize for

scarecrows this year were mother and daughter Nicola and Jessica Bowker, of Low Moor, Clitheroe, who created a scary troll hiding

under the bridge to catch unwary passers-by. In keeping with this year’s theme there was more than one appearance of the “Britain’s Got Talent” judging trio - and up one cul-de-sac a scarecrow version of the show’s unlikely star, singer Susan Boyle, was in full voice. Throughout the weekend there

were musical performances, a fun fair on the Church Croft, a chil dren’s boat race and on Saturday^ afternoon a variety of races for all age groups. Monday also saw the craft fair and farmers’ market, the crowning of the new May Queen and the Mallard Stakes - with more colourful ducks navigating the stream to the cheers of those who had braved the elements.
