Bill’s on top of the world after epic charity effort

>. . : by Faiza Afzaal

CLITHEROE estate agent Bill Honeywell is feeling on top of the world after completing a daunting, Lake District challenge. On Saturday, the 56-year-old, who

runs Honeywell estate agents, finally completed the round of all 214 of Wainwright’s Lake District Fells, 420 miles and the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest nearly five times, in an astonishing 55 days (39 walking, 16' days off). During this period, the keen walker

reached the summit of every one of the 214 fells listed in Alfred Wainwright's

■ ■ ' - y ■ .. .. - ■

Pictorial Guides, finishing on schedule at the final fell, Loughrigg. And Bill has another good reason to.

celebrate as he may have broken th e : record of becoming the fastest walker to . have completed the Wainwright chal lenge. He said: “I have been in touch with the Wainwright Society and this may well be the fastest completion by a fell walker. The famous fell runner. Joss : Naylor, has run them much more quick-. - ly and someone else says they recall a ; walker doing them in under two months' about 25 years ago. I am awaiting con firmation of this.” .

. ' Bill, who lives in West Bradford with

his wife, Valerie, braved all weathers and completed the peaks walk in memoryof ■. a dear friend, Mrs Margaret Watkins and is delighted to have raised money

/ for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. In fact, the tireless fund-raiser has beat en his target of £5,000 and raised over £6,000 with more to come, hopefully over £7,000 by the time it’s all in. Mrs Watkins died just before Christ

mas, aged 67, after a four-year .battle with cancer. The grandmother-of-seven was well-respected in the community

- and was a member of the Ribble Valley Macmillan 100 Club. Bill said: “When I first had the idea

to do this I thought it would be difficult, but once I got started I realised it was going to be much harder than I imag ined - probably fewer than five people have done it. So I’m delighted to have finished on schedule and that Mar garet’s husband, Mike, was able to do two-thirds of the fells with me, and that we managed to raise over £6,000 for Rosemere.” He added: “Two of Marg aret’s

grandsons were in the group on Loughrigg, the final fell - five-year-old

Harry Watkins and 11-year old James Matthew, who was wearing Margaret's old boots!” Bill is no stranger to taking part in

charity challenges. In 2007, the keen cyclist joined 5,000 cyclists on a 120- mile journey to complete the British Cyclo Sportive event in aid of multiple sclerosis sufferers. - The pedal pushing father-of-two has

also previously completed charity bike rides from Land's End to John O'Groats and part of the North Sea Cycle Route,

College rejects car crash claim

CLAIMS th a t a group of boarding pupils at Stonyhurst College crashed a car being driven “a t high speed and recklessly” then “ran off” have been refuted by the college. The claims were made in an

e-mail sent to several news, organisations, including the Clitheroe Advertiser, and Times. Although purporting to be from “a resident of Hurst Green’/ the e-mail contained false contact details and a false, name, “Andrew Johns” - pre sumably a thinly-disguised reference to the college head master, Mr Andrew Johnson. ■ I t is the latest in a series of

misleading and potentially damaging e-mails sent to news organisations and attacking the college over various issues. This one claimed th a t six pupils were returning to the

college “after an evening of heavy drinking in village!’ when their car “ploughed into the subs tantial stone pillar enter ing the Sto n y h u rst grounds from Hu rst Green, knocking over the pillar and writing off the car”. I t then claimed that the pupils ran off, “abandoning the demolished. pillar and car”. This week a spokesman for

. the college confirmed there had been a minor incident, but the claims made in the e-mail were either completely inaccu-. rate or grossly exaggerated. A statement issued by the col lege reads:. “As the summer term was ■

beginning-one of our sixth form day pupils had a road accident and caused damage to a post on the edge of the College campus. No other '

vehicle was involved and no- one was injured.

, “The incident occurred

when a few pupils were return ing from an evening event at a local Catholic Club. . “The car being driven by a pupil misjudged the narrow entrance to the college grounds and hit a stone pillar. . The driver isn’t a boarder at the college. “The boys took the sensible

action of pushing the car off the road, so as not to cause an obstruction for other vehicles, and alerted a member of staff who lived nearby. “The pupils then returned

to the college to repor t the incident. . “All of the boys were given a proportionate punishment and Stonyhurst College now con siders the matter closed.”
